Ainge is stacking assets. It's a shame he didn't give Whiteside the 10 day contract, I was always interested in what he could do and now he's found a home in Miami.

McGee just makes head scratching plays, and has a low BBIQ. Hopefully he is receptive to learning from Brad Stevens and the vets on the team or else this is going to turn into a Mikki Moore or Patrick O'Bryant type signing. I still don't understand why he isn't a better rebounder than he is, but at least he can bother shots.

I have no problem with this move. Worst case we get what we all think, and best case he becomes a rotational center/fringe starter on this team.

7ppg/7rpg/2 blks career playoff averages . Those are Gobert type numbers this year .  Just let him set picks for Isiah and role hard to the hoop on offense.

Is anyone else actually excited, even just a little bit? Besides the knucklehead plays, I've always liked McGee for what he brings (and what we need): athletic big, shot blocker, rebounder.

I think I'd rather have McGee now over Turner if we can make that happen. Open up more time for Young, Jerebko, and Crowder. With Sully out a 4 and 5 rotation of Bass, Zeller, and a recovering KO is weak.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

Also, just when I thought this team couldn't get more exciting.  ;D

Wouldn't that mean we actually had some front court players to take time from?
Crowder and Jerebko have given us quality back up big minutes. Olynyk is coming back from injury and Zeller/Bass seem to be entrenched as the starters. I don't think any of those guys should be buried on the bench in favor of McGee.

This is what I'm confused about. The deadline to sign free agent players, and then use them for the playoffs ended up right? If we're trying to showcase, then maybe seeing him do well in short spurts would've been great.

Either way McGee has so many tools, its mind boggling.
The rule is a player has to be bought out by March 1st. McGee was.

None of those guys are centers, and they shouldn't be playing center. Brad Stevens has openly stated the same thing.
Zeller is a center and Olynyk has played center for us in the past.

Olynyk is not a center, and Zeller is not a shot blocker, he is ideally a backup center. I'm excited Ainge managed to get a player of McGee's ability at center for basically free. What a season, getting Zeller, McGee, IT, and Jerebko all for basically nothing. Amazing
correct.

this is the sort of thing makes me so happy danny is running the celtics. if mcgee doesn't pan out, no problem. if he does pan out, what an acquisition! zeller has already proven to be a good addition. IT, what can we say? brilliant pick up for almost nothing. and jerebko is interesting.

and don't forget crowder either.

danny has done well, very well. i guess we won't see many "fire danny" threads for at least a few weeks.  ;D

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
I assume the second year is non guaranteed which could help make the numbers work in a future deal.

JaVale isn't great but he absolutely has more upside than Luigi so why not do it.

I also assume he came here because we could offer him the best chance to play. The problem with that is I don't want to see him cut into any of our front court guys playing time.

There is no deadline to sign players for the playoffs until the regular season ends.  The rule is a player can't be playoff eligible if he was with a team after 11:59 pm March 1st.  He was released by the 6ers a few minutes before the deadline.

Ah, gotcha thanks.

Oh I am.

I would've loved Sanders, because Sanders seem like a really intelligent player. But for people calling McGee retard/retarded/stupid. Give him a chance... Don't shoot him down when hes always been shot at from fans.

I believe as a Celtics fan, rooting for a players success should always be a given unless they fail to meet our expectations/trust. We got McGee for like NOTHING. 76ers are PAYING for his contract, and hes probably not getting more than 3 mil per year.

Lets see how McGee fares out.

Agree with you.  This is the most interesting well under .500 team I've ever seen...lol
I've really enjoyed watching the games this season.

Honestly, my initial reaction to this is "gross". Really, why do we need to sign a player who clearly has very little between the ears and has proven over his career to be a waste of any sort of talent or athleticism?

But I guess when I think about it a little more, it doesn't bother me too much. There really is very little risk in signing McGee. If he turns out to be the bum he always has been it's not like he's costing the Celtics much in the way of financial flexibility or assets. If he somehow turns his career around with the Celtics, well, Ainge has managed to acquire yet another assets for next to nothing, a la Jordan Crawford.

So yeah, I guess I'm hoping McGee can at least play well enough to become a tradeable asset. That's the best case scenario I can imagine, because I don't see any way he'll ever be in our long term plans, there is just too much evidence he's not a good basketball player. But GM's get doped all the time by the promise of tall, athletic big men, so I could see a scenario where Ainge could take advantage of that.

I'm not sure how anyone wouldn't like this signing. If you don't like him as a person or a player then so be it, but this is exactly what the Celtics need!

Quick question: If Boston keeps him into next season he obviously becomes an expiring contract, but do teams pick up his contract he signed with the Celtics or what Philly is supposed to pay him? Alone for  next year we now have an expiring contract to use in a trade.

good question, here come some mediocre thoughts.

mcgee did average over 8 rebounds a game for a couple of years, and, his career TRB% is 15.8, which places him between alonzo mourning and ilgauskas. he CAN rebound, but hasn't done it consistently well.

could he have played on teams were other did the rebounding, not him? he did an OK job in washington, but in denver, he played on teams that had mogzov, faried, or hickson.

or, perhaps his role (or maybe his small BBIQ) directed him to block, harass shots, and don't worry too much about rebounds. maybe he wasn't interested in them.

will his role on the celtics change his rebounding? i have no idea. but we are about to find out.
