We have two point guards - Isiah Thomas from the Detroit Pistons and Isaiah Thomas currently of the beloved Boston Celtics.

Isiah was about 6 foot 1, Isaiah is about 5 foot 9.
Both players have averaged in the high teens as well as averaging over 20 points a game in a season.
Both players are above average passers.
Both players excelled and excel in the NBA despite size limitations.
One is in the Hall of Fame. One may someday reach the Hall of Fame.
One created a moment for a Celtic legend (Larry Bird), that will live on in Celtics lore forever.
One currently plays for the Celtics when the team is in desperate need of legends to create lore.

So I wonder, is there anyone on the board who thinks Isaiah can be a better player than Isiah of the Detroit Pistons HOF fame?

Personally, if I was a betting man, I wouldn't be against Isiah of the Pistons. I saw him during his prime, and while at the time I couldn't stand him, (or any of those "Bad Boy Pistons"), I'd be foolish not to recognize that he was such an incredible player. (If you don't know about Isiah Thomas, all you need to know is contained in game 6 and 7 of the 1988 finals against the Lakers).
I think Isaiah Thomas may have the raw tools to become a great player, and HOFer someday, but how history shakes out? Who knows. And Isiah Thomas has set the bar very high.

Isaiah might make an allstar team someday if he is lucky.  Isiah made it every year.  These two should not be compared.

I went to church with and also worked for two separate Richard Starkeys. Not kidding. I've often fantasized about getting those two in a room with Ringo for a 3-way drum-off.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Is reverse tommy point a thing? cause that would be needed in this situation.

Isaiah Thomas is an awesome player, I'm sure most of the Celtics fans loved the trade for him, but he's not Isiah Thomas level.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Definitely the one leading the Celtics to the 8th lottery spot.
Forget the other guy.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Easy it's isiah Thomas
2 championships + 2 all star  MVPs + 12 all stars in  the golden age of basketball

For a few years he was able to lead Detroit over the Celtics and lakers dominated league

That is a lot to beat

Meanwhile our Thomas has only averaged 20 and 6 in one season with the Kings (no disrespect to Thomas, I still think he is a good player, a valued player considering he was drafted last)

But I think it is clear who the better player is

This reminds me of the "Stiemer has the shot-blocking instincts of Bill Russell" argument.

It's cool to be excited about our players, but let's be real:  The Pistons' Thomas was clearly a HOFer.  You could tell watching him that he was a legitimately great, top-50 of all-time type of talent.  Thomas 2.0 is an exciting player, but I don't think many fans would place him in the top-10 of PGs currently in the league.
