Don't understand me wrong, I was happy with drafting James Young at 17th. I understand the kid is extremely young, still has to turn 20. And although his PHX game was one of his best I have watched him closely over the last month. Some observations:
- He falls asleep on defense way too often, besides that his D is already a complete mess, even other rookes ran by him like he is not even on the court.
- His offense is alright although I haven't seen too much, of course because of the minutes. His FT shooting is worse than I expected, goes 1 for 2 way too often.
- He shows NO emotion. When AB hits a buzzerbeater against the Laker he still doesn't show emotions... Often when the whole bench is running and jumping around he is still shows no emotion.
- He has not getten better over the course of the season, although this point is maybe not fair.

The careless defense and the no emotions makes me believe he doesn't really care. While a 19 year old kid should be so excited to play in the NBA, to become a better player and to become a fan favourite. Young shows nothing of this.

Well he can still be a solid starter and maybe even an all star I doubt if the determination and work ethic is there.
A whole lot of people still believe he is part of the future, I think GMs still think about him as an interesting asset... Could we use him at draft day to move up 5-10 spots?

What do you guys think of his attitude and performances? It's just the complete otherside than we have seen from Marcus Smart.

I think you're reading way too much into it. The kid has a lot of nerves, he is really gun shy on the floor and has a lot of learning to do. He should have stayed another year at school. I watched him play some at Kentucky, he was never the player that wears emotions on their sleeves, a lot of guys are just like him.

You're much more observant than I am, because I don't think he's seen enough time on the floor to gather too much yet.  I still see him as the long-term starting two next to Smart if he can make his team/individual defense passable as a starter. Stanley Johnson would be a tremendous 3 next to Smart and Young.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
If there is legitimate hype about him, then I would certainly consider a trade. Players on rookie contracts who haven't proven they can't play can sometimes be super-valuable. If we could get a late lottery pick for him and choose, say, Harrell, then I would go for it. If he can help us move up from 10 to 5, then how can you say no? There may also be an option for a young player who is a better fit.

I like Young and am perfectly willing to ride out his development, but too many rookies never work it out. If we can get a more proven commodity, then why not - it's not like we are talking about Wiggins.

He shows NO emotion.

Have you not learned from Robert Parish?
There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.'

You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

I don't think there is any hype surrounding young

He hasn't played a whole lot

Seems kind of pointless to trade considering the return won't be as much as what we could get developing him

But if Danny did trade him it would be because he didn't feel he had the potential to be a good player anymore

I don't know how anyone could declare a player is "this" or "that" 30 some games into a season? if 3 yrs. from now he looks the same? then ok, you're onto something.

as far as trading him goes. I feel this kid's going to be special and I like everything I hear and see about him. but I also felt Gerald Green and Marshon Brooks were going to be special, so clearly I don't know what the hell i'm talkin about.

as much as i'd like to be able to sit on this guy for a few yrs., i'm pretty sure Danny would trade him in a heart beat after hearing when they were going after Dragic that "Smart" would not be included in any deal...it gave me a sense that pretty much everyone else was available.

plus, I've learned my lesson after Big Al and not to fall in love with players.

realistically what would we get for a rookie who is YOUNG and hasn't had time to prove anything?
he is signed to us on a rookie deal, if a big trade comes along and he is to be part of it then it'll take ainge some thinking
young is the best pure shooter we've had since ray allen and that is quite a talent

i won't give to much thought on how good young or smart will be with what we've seen so far this year, give them both a solid 2 years then see what they look like

Probably not the right time to "sell high" on Young, but it'd be ridiculous to go to the other extreme and treat him as untouchable.

what would be the point of trading him unless its a part of a deal that brings you a star or a top 5 pick??

we'd look pretty stupid if we trade away a guy we picked at 17 that was starting to show he could be a player in the league just for the sake of getting a low end lottery pick that could end up being a bust
