All this amounts to is "I'm a serial pessimist, so the other team's raw prospect looks better than our raw prospect" to me. There's not really much to argue.

EP has started almost as many games as Smart has just appeared in. Played in 40 total games vs Smarts 22 games and so far shooting worse also at 6 more minutes per game only .5pts better. He is also no way near the defender Smart is. He does have more ast and reb per but given teams and playing style that is expected. No way I choose EP over Smart.

I don't care about the stats, I watch Payton play, and Smart.....I Like Payton, keyword is I like , but still I think he will be better for sure, i dont think orlando would do it, but i bet boston would.

And Payton is a pretty [dang] good defender.
Stats were only one part, style of game is huge. Magic play different than C's and allow EP to make more decisions with the ball. Smart hasn't had the same playing time or freedom just wait till Smart gets 40 games under his belt.
I agree.  Payton has had a bigger role.  We should give smart time. I think he's going to be a really nice player eventually.
I actually think both players will be good but based on what I have seen EP is a better defending MCW (14pts/6reb/7ast/1stl)which is good and Smart is more like Kawhi Lenard (just flip boards and ast for 16pts/3reb/7ast/2stl) at the PG spot. Smart will give more D, 3s, and toughness. EP will just be more one on one dynamic.

I personally don't think Marcus Smart is going to be that good but at least give the kid a chance. Elfrid Payton is good but he has no jumper.

He's a bust. I was right on Rondo being a role player when everyone here called him the franchise. I was right when I said the Bradley contract was horrible and was right on Jeff Green. I'm telling you that Smart is going to stay in the league for a while as a non shooting defensive player. Marcus Banks 2.0 is an awful offensive player. Draft Express compared the two before the draft, Roy H also mentioned on draft night that Banks and Smart were similar. They were all correct about the worst case scenario. Should have taken Randle. Hell Elfrid would have been better. Trade him for a future 1st if you can get it and move on.

wow! I watched the 1st half last night and I have a completely different view of smart.

he just does things on the defensive end that 10 yr. vets don't do. I really can't believe how good he is defensively.

I doubt he'll be an all-star but I don't know, no one does. but I will say if he gets some guys around that can play a lil bit of some D and some good team D. this team will be scary to play against.

just watch smart when his guy doesn't have the ball, and what he does on screens.

Do people watch the games before analyzing players?  Smart is making steady improvement in his offensive game.  His outside shooting is much better than expected, and tonight he took the ball to the hoop a couple of times and made good decisions.  His passing has been terrific.  He posted up last night and had a great behind the head blind pass to Zeller, and some good alley oops too.  He had six assists and no turnovers, with good defense last night.  Smart is a hard worker, with great anticipation, and he learns.  No knock on Efried, whom we have seen twice in Boston, but Smart is a keeper, and potentially an All-Star.

Payton's playing better, but I'd rather see if Smart has the goods.
This. Smart's been a bust so far but 30 games or so is way too early to give up. But I'm not interested in waiting like 4 years like we would have had to with Billups

I don't get people who say Smart isn't a point guard. Whenever they actually let him handle the ball, he hits his teammates with lasers and puts them in good positions. I feel way more nervous when Turner has the ball - I always feel like it's a stupid mistake about to happen.

This is a classic "the grass is greener on the other side" thread.

I think the biggest thing is seeing how these two get better next season when they work on their weaknesses. Smarts already has gotten better, and in the tight games this season, he's been in the mix of it on the most part and made some good defensive plays and  has hit some huge shots. Not bad for a kid who can't shoot.

Smart's already showing gradual improvement in his game.  He's made some very nice plays in recent games, and has been terrific defensively.  And let's not forget the injuries he's had to battle through this year.  Recall KO last year, who looked horrible for the first half of the season.  Once he battled past the injuries, got more playing time, and gained some confidence he finished out the year quite nicely.

Besides, Payton's shooting percentages are abysmal.  Rondo 2.0 at the free throw line.  I present to you exhibit A:

What the heck is he doing with his left hand on those free throws?  Ugly.  Payton is a nice player, but I'd personally rather have Smart.

If Rondo drove you nuts, Peyton would end up having you committed.

Do Smart's antagonists even think about defense?  Do they know how demoralizing it is to have soft sieve-like players?

Payton and Smart are both good young players.  One is a combo and one is a pure PG.  The end (for now).

I would not do that trade - I like Peyton, but I think Smart's defensive impact and overall upside is still much higher.  I also really like the strides he's made with his offensive game.  Hopefully that trend will continue.

That said, I'm really tired of people asserting that, "Smart's a winner!".

Let's wait until Smart has actually won something before we say that, please?
