I'm not sure why WCS is getting comparing to Brandan Wright. Wright is 210, while Cauley-Stein is 244.
Brandan Wright hasn't been 210 lbs. for a very, very long time.
Espn has him listed as 210. Basketball reference has him listed as 205. Wikipedia has him listed at 209. NBA.com has him listed at 210. Sweet pictures though.

Wright might never have the chiseled physique of Dwight Howard, but the lanky 6-foot-10 lefty reported to training camp noticeably thicker. Wright said he added 15 pounds since last season through an intense weightlifting program and strict diet.

“I wanted to be able to take more of a pounding, be able to hold up against the bigger guys in the West, so I had to do things to be able to withstand a long 82-game season,” said Wright, who is still listed at his rookie weight of 210 pounds but weighed in at 240. “I’m faster, bigger and stronger. I think the biggest change is I’ve seen is stamina-wise and I can move laterally better.”

Tyson Chandler would have done a lot more in 3 years in the NCAA. He was so way ahead of WCS at the same age. I think Sam Dalembert would be a more likely projection.
Tyson Chandler didn't really develop until he got to New Orleans at the age of 24. When he was 23 he only played 26 minutes a game and averaged 5.3 points. Cauley-Stein is 21 now. Both Chandler and DeAndre took a long time to develop. It is good that WCS stayed in college 3 years otherwise it was unlikely he would positively contribute until after his rookie deal was over. Now that he has played more, I think he will be be fully established by the time his rookie contract is over.

Bummer, I deleted last post by accident ... it was something like this:

Tyson Chandler had established himself as one of the top interior defenders in the league by the time he was 22 (4th year) when he was playing under Scott Skiles in Chicago. Tyson led the Bulls the #2 defensive FG% + #2 defensive efficiency in the league. Tyson would have blossomed even sooner if not for a serious back injury he suffered in his 3rd year.

You could tell Tyson Chandler was special from the first moment you saw him in his rookie year. His combination of physical talent and mental characteristics separated him from other rookies. He was a leader. He inspired his teammates with his energy, hustle and competitive spirit. He loved doing the dirty work in the paint. Playing defense and going after loose balls. Tyson lacked the fundamentals to go along with his the physical and mental talent but you could clearly see he had something special about him. Heck, the photo journalists used to beg the coaching staff to put him in games more because they got all their best photos when Tyson was in the game because the whole team elevated their play from his energy and toughness.

I fully believe Tyson Chandler would have performed at a much higher level in the NCAA than WCS has done in his 3 years there if Tyson had of gone to college instead of going straight to the NBA.

Good catch. I apologize for the snark.

That being said, Cauley-Stein is 5lbs more than Wright is now at the age of 21. I think 265 is plenty big enough to play Center in the NBA. If Wright gained 40 lbs with a much smaller frame, what is there to say that WCS can't gain 20 lbs?

I think his build is more similar to Tyson Chandler or DeAndre Jordan than a Brandan Wright. Both those guys have proved plenty big enough to be elite defensive 5's in the NBA.

I wouldn't mind Stein. I think bulk is a little overrated when it comes to NBA centers. I mean, there is a minimum necessary level, but the success of guys like Noah, Bosh and even Chandler in recent years is telling me that there are other factors that are more important.

wright has wider shoulders and it took him a while to develop his lower body frame

WCS has narrow shoulder, narrow hips.    Guys like WCS and Noel will have a tough time putting on weight. IF they can, they will be good players in the league. But it's a big IF.

This is getting ridiculous. WCS is getting compared to two guys who weighed 210 or less when they came into the league despite currently weighing 244.

His body type is not like Noel's. He's significantly bigger than Noel. He is significantly bigger than Wright.

How a guy who is currently 244, and should be 250+ by the time he comes into the league is getting compared to guys who were 210 or less when drafted is beyond me. Only on Celticsblog.

Brandan Wright can't do half of what WCS is being projected for defensively in the NBA. With WCS its all projection, Wright has given us years of minutes to show he can't.

I do worry that WCS won't transition to being an undersized center, those types have a high learning curve.

WCS has some unique skills but what about ability to  handle the traditional responsibilities? Like don' t get killed by Dwight Howard. Don't let him constantly get good position .

Howard, Valencianas, Aldridge, Ibaka etc.

You don't draft a guy in the lotto who can only come in for special situations
Wright and WCS are pretty much exact opposites as big men.

Limited skill set, never going to be a 15-18 foot shooter. And I'm not huge on him - def not a top 5 pick. But he does all the intangibles, will play his tail off, plays big in crunch time (see OT win against Ole Miss), and protects the rim.

Or, you know, like Yoki has pointed out, we could have had Hassan Whiteside for free.  Ugh.
