Maybe if we take on Rivers his dad will agree to coach LAC out of playoff contention for a lottery pick coming our way

Hahahahaha, This.

I just knew this was coming.

I'd be surprised if a team WOULDN'T give up a 2nd for Rivers.  He's bad, but he's not THAT bad.  He's like 22 years old and showing some progress.

I'd be willing to say he's 22 and has talent, but I'm not sure he's showing much progress.  Aside from free throw shooting, his numbers are down across the board.

I do think he's worth a late second to get better info on to determine whether he's worth offering a contract to in the summer with his Bird rights, but I'm not sure he's progressed much.  Might also make sense for a team who exercised a rookie option this fall and has regrets at doing so too, to swap Rivers with said player.  I'm sure there are a few of those out there, and maybe Ainge likes one of them enough.

Austin Rivers is garbage.  He's a salary dump here.  If he gets minutes, it's to help us lose games and improve lottery position.

Seriously, he's one of the worst guards in the NBA.

This. It is amazing that every guy that Ainge acquires seems to have a fan club that talks about the great potential and upside.

This is why I started the thread about Celtics being a developmental league team. We do not have one player that has reached his potential, well maybe Wallace. Everyone else is still developing. We suck!!

@GwashburnGlobe ยท 21m 21 minutes ago While Austin Rivers appears headed to #celtics, NBA source said he may not stay with team. Stay tuned.

I'll be amazed if Danny can get any sort of asset out of Rivers.  Even a top-55 protected second rounder would be a coup.

I have no faith in Washburn's "sources", though.

I think you're blinded in your distaste for Rivers.

Rivers' fourth year option wasn't picked up.  Obviously, the team he's been on for three years didn't think he was worth hanging onto.

Among guys who are 6'4" and under and who have played 15 mpg (in at least 15 games), there are only two guys who have a lower TS% and eFG% than Rivers:  Ramon Sessions and Willie Green, both of whom have more of a positive track record, but who are having horrific seasons.

I do feel better that Rivers isn't the absolute worst rotation SG in the league this year.  That's pretty clearly Willie Green, with a 3.0 PER and a .326 eFG%.

Austin Rivers just never seemed to make an impact in the NBA like I thought he was going to. Coming out of college he was really coveted. He slipped come draft night I think.

I heard him interviewed a few times, and he was less than impressive. I think cocky is the description of his attitude in the interviews.

He has some skills, good size, what can it hurt? Throw him on the heap.

What is the downside though? Would you rather have seen Salmons on the court? Salmons is on the downside of his career, Rivers could potentially improve under a new system. The worst that could happen is he plays like garbage and we don't pick up his QO next year. That would leave us in the exact same place we would have been with Salmons. I don't see any downside.

He costs more money, which is more Wyc's issue than mine.

I'm just amused to see people suggesting he's a good player, or that he is worth a first rounder. That's just bizarre to me.  People should be realistic about how useless Rivers has been.

Teams don't decline the 4th year option on a lottery pick very frequently.  New Orleans must be thrilled to clear his salary.  We should be getting compensated by them for taking him on.

What's his contract , 2 million ?  Why are they thrilled about clearing that ?

Low risk contract to take on, IMO.  22 years of age.  Get a coach in there that knows how to put him in a position to succeed.  Still really only a Senior in college, if that.

Even billionaires don't like paying millions for trash.
do you dislike the Rivers family or something?

What does it have to do with the Rivers family.  You seem awfully defensive of the guy.

He's had years in the league and just doesn't look like a serviceable pro who can make a difference on a team. Why doe it have to do with anything else? I don't like gunners who shoot under 40%.

He's played 165 games, so "years" is technically correct but just barely.

I just don't understand the venom behind declaring a 22 year old garbage and reacting with disgust to him coming to Boston.

A.  He's certainly better than Salmons at this point for this team.
B.  He doesn't have a problematic salary.
C.  He might get better with CBS.

Mike

When did pointing out that a lousy player is lousy somehow morph into "venom"?  Was it at the exact moment that the word "Celtics" became attached?

Plenty of people have remarked on Rivers not being any good.  Only a few act like Rivers peed in their cornflakes.  Can you tell the difference between these two statements?

"Rivers sucks but he's still young and if he can't get better, it doesn't cost us anything."

"Rivers sucks and always will suck and there's no possible way he will ever do anything but suck and no one should ever suggest anything different."

Boston's on phones now, trying to find a deal to move on Austin Rivers, league sources tell Yahoo.

More to Roy's point:

New Orleans changed course in 3-way trade talks, insisted on subbing Austin Rivers for John Salmons, sources said. Boston, Memphis relented.

Ainge actually wanted Salmons more than Rivers.  And Rivers is only about $400,000 more expensive.  He doesn't think whatever potential Rivers has is worth even that minimal cost.

If nothing else, Ainge is more likely to get something for Rivers than for Salmons.

Ainge would probably get a phantom top 55-protected second rounder for either Salmons or Rivers if he were willing to use a second round pick to dump the contract.

Why would they want to dump an expiring contract?

How long does it take for 27 other GMs to hang up on you?

Because they don't want to pay him, which is why they're looking for a third team to take Rivers' contract.

Speaking of which, they just found that team. LOL:
