i have no problem with attaining him since we got the first, too. Most likely he's just more expiring money.

What does worry me about us getting him is playing time. He's going to require some pkaying time to evaluate him properly, which takes guard minutes from Smart and Young. I'm all for giving the kid a chance here, but not if it requires taking away even more playing time from our young guys who don't get enough time as it is.

Austin Rivers is garbage.  He's a salary dump here.  If he gets minutes, it's to help us lose games and improve lottery position.

Seriously, he's one of the worst guards in the NBA.
What is the downside though? Would you rather have seen Salmons on the court? Salmons is on the downside of his career, Rivers could potentially improve under a new system. The worst that could happen is he plays like garbage and we don't pick up his QO next year. That would leave us in the exact same place we would have been with Salmons. I don't see any downside.

He costs more money, which is more Wyc's issue than mine.

I'm just amused to see people suggesting he's a good player, or that he is worth a first rounder. That's just bizarre to me.  People should be realistic about how useless Rivers has been.

Teams don't decline the 4th year option on a lottery pick very frequently.  New Orleans must be thrilled to clear his salary.  We should be getting compensated by them for taking him on.

What's his contract , 2 million ?  Why are they thrilled about clearing that ?

Low risk contract to take on, IMO.  22 years of age.  Get a coach in there that knows how to put him in a position to succeed.  Still really only a Senior in college, if that.

Even billionaires don't like paying millions for trash.
do you dislike the Rivers family or something?

What does it have to do with the Rivers family.  You seem awfully defensive of the guy.

He's had years in the league and just doesn't look like a serviceable pro who can make a difference on a team. Why doe it have to do with anything else? I don't like gunners who shoot under 40%.

He's played 165 games, so "years" is technically correct but just barely.

I just don't understand the venom behind declaring a 22 year old garbage and reacting with disgust to him coming to Boston.

A.  He's certainly better than Salmons at this point for this team.
B.  He doesn't have a problematic salary.
C.  He might get better with CBS.

Mike

When did pointing out that a lousy player is lousy somehow morph into "venom"?  Was it at the exact moment that the word "Celtics" became attached?

I understand theres no risk in bringing him in and that hes expiring.

My big thing is I dont want to see him taking minutes from James Young and Marcus Smart just so we can 'get a look at him.'

I think a lot of folks are blowing this way out of proportion because Rivers was a guy they wanted on draft night and theyre excited that we actually have him now.  Thats the only rational explanation I can think of about being excited about this.  Hes played bad in the NBA.

Yeah Chauncey Billups took 5 years to develop, but if he can used as an example to bring him in, can I name the hundreds of other Guards that NEVER got it right and are playing in china or working in a warehouse right now?

Mark Murphy says he's probably not coming here:

The Jeff Green trade appears to be getting more complex by the hour, with the New Orleans Pelicans brought in as a third team to help facilitate all of the moving parts.

Though Austin Rivers, son of Clippers coach Doc Rivers, was listed as part of the deal in an ESPN report, a league source said that it's unlikely the struggling guard is heading to his father's former team.

"The bottom line is that the Celtics don't need another guard," the source said while acknowledging that Rivers has been added to the mix, it's not with the Celtics as a destination.

Instead, the trade, which must wait until the opening of league offices on Monday to be approved, is expected to bring the Celtics a future first round pick and Memphis forward Tayshaun Prince, whose $7.3 million contract is expiring.

"This deal is a continuously changing thing," said the source. "More names could still be added to it before it's over."

Of course, it doesn't make sense why Rivers would be in the deal, but not coming to Boston.  Memphis needs to clear salary, not take on dead weight.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I think you've made your point that you don't like him Roy.

Looks like we'll need to wait some time to see if he's less viable than Pressy.

The guy you use as your screen name was a better player.

I remember the Adam Morrison disdain a few years ago, but I think we may have a new winner  ;D

Disappointed we're trading Jeff Green but getting Austin Rivers.  It's been my goal to have all of David Falk's clients on the same team -- just as we get one step closer with Rivers, we take one step back by trading Jeff Green.

If we kept Green, we'd only be missing Greg Monroe, Otto Porter, Roy Hibbert, and Elton Brand.  So disappointing!!

Maybe I read it differently but I took it as there being a possibility that a fourth team is involved to take Rivers.

I'll be amazed if Danny can get any sort of asset out of Rivers.  Even a top-55 protected second rounder would be a coup.

I have no faith in Washburn's "sources", though.

It's safe to say it's a bit uncertain as to where Rivers winds up.  Still, if there's a 4th team, I feel someone or something else will be headed to the Celtics.  Seems weird for New Orleans to get something in Pondexter for things that no one wants -- which either means that Rivers is wanted (be it Boston or a 4th team) or they should give up a second-rounder.  And if it's a 4th team that wants Rivers, they'll have to give up something.  And that something should come here.

I'd be surprised if a team WOULDN'T give up a 2nd for Rivers.  He's bad, but he's not THAT bad.  He's like 22 years old and showing some progress.

LOL I think Austin may have cut Roy off in traffic or something.

I mean, he's no worse than half the fringe-NBA floatsome around the NBA.
