As contrary to popular belief as this observation is going to look to many, I have actually been quite impressed with Rondo's defense since the Phoenix game.

Both Rondo and Bradley got embarrassed in that game by Dragic and Bledsoe.  It's looked to me like they have both stepped up their play on that end of the floor since and have been playing very good defense.

It hasn't translated into wins against some of the best teams in the league, but I'm looking for our team to keep fighting and break the seal on winning a basketball game soon enough.

I think, specifically, you could look to the first two quarters of that game. In the first quarter his defense was pretty bad against whoever he was guarding (probably Dragic). In the second quarter he was covering Thomas and pretty much shut him down. His play's definitely been better since then.

This doesn't get enough hype: I have it on good authority that IT the fourth best point guard in the entire NBA.

More proof that PER is one of the most useless stats.

Not completely useless.   Not the MOST useless.   But one of the most useless.

It's a pretty good stat. The best players are always at the top of the PER.

Cum hoc ergo propter hoc.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

It's great for trivia though!

Who has the highest career PER?:

A. Dennis Rodman
B. Christian Laettner
C. Dee Brown

Admit it, you have no idea!  :)

The highest career PER in NBA history is Michael Jordan.

And every player in the top twenty is either in the Hall of Fame or will be.

Yea, it's a real bad stat.

Clearly you've never studied Latin.

Do you think that Isiaiah Thomas is the fourth best point guard in the NBA right now? Do you think that JJ Barea is the sixth? I asked you this in another thread, and you never responded. Is that stammering?

Do you think Alexy Shved is really better than Mike Conley?

For comparison the tracking defence data for other point gaurds.  Not sure how much this data is affected by being on a bad team.    Included D Williams and T Lawson,  couple of decent pg's on average teams.

Smart's data is off the charts.  Small sample size,  ha.

Chris Paul

Steph Curry

Rondo

John Wall

Lowry

D Williams

T Parker

T Lawson

M Smart

Every single one of those guards other than Smart have better defensive bigs behind them.
I always felt like Rondo's defensive ability lay more in his ability to get into and correctly anticipate the passing lanes and rebound every missed shot. I never really thought of him as a harrassment artist like Smart or a guy that denies ball entry like Bradley

Numbers don't like. Only people lie.

Barea and Thomas are playing great this year.

Things change. You need to adjust.

Do you suppose Hollinger considered MJ's position when he was deriving the formula for PER?  Of course he did.  PER is retrofitted to the 20 years before its creation.  It's still crap.

For the record, Christian Laettner is the best of those players and Rodman is below average.

I want to be clear that I was being sarcastic about Barea.  He's not even in the same universe as John Wall.  PER is about as useful analytically as Summer League.

If you did indeed study Latin then we can only blame your apparent mental deficiency for your apparent difficulties regarding comprehension.

Using statistics without any knowledge about how those statistics work is a recipe for disaster. Or, at least, the persistent posts of a CelticsBlog user who is actively spreading disinformation in the mistaken belief that he is right.

Can you go into detail of why you think its a good stat & why it should be held in higher regard around here?

What aspects/components of PER do you find to be the most telling and speak most to the true nature of a basketball player's worth in the NBA?

Are you John Hollinger?  What is factual about PER?

Take every known stat being tracked in the modern era.  Combine them in arbitrary ways using shooting percentages as coefficients.  Adjust until Jordan and Olajuwon are 1 and 2.  Call it PER.

Works for me.

People are afraid of facts. I see it all the time.
