I know we haven't even started this season yet, but I'm a long-term investor...  ;D

I ask this question because 95% of you are more knowledgeable than I am on basketball.  Given that BK will have either crappy or no draft picks for the next four years, I'm trying to figure out when they're really going to start sucking.  Hey, we'll get screwed in the lottery, but we'll have a few weeks of hope...

I'm looking out to the 2016-17 season, although I'm secretly hoping for 2015-16.

I think they're actually going to be okay this year.  Lopez scares me, as long as he doesn't spend too much time in surgery.  D-Will has to be better than last year, as does Kirilenko, even as he ages.  Joe Johnson should also be able to produce.  After that, well, I don't know what to tell you, but when Jarrett Jack is the best guy on the bench and you've got no idea what Bogdanovic will bring, you've got depth issues.

2015-16: They've still got the Big 3 and whomever they take with Atlanta's pick in the draft.  No cap room to do anything, unless they can unload a bunch.  They could still sneak into the playoffs this year, assuming that the East hasn't seen enough improvement to look decent, but it's going to be close.

2016-17: Now it gets interesting.  You've only got $26m of salary going into the year, with JJ and Brook Lopez now free agents.  JJ's gonna be 35, so you're not going to get much from him if you want to resign him.  D-Will will be 32, so he's on the other side, as well.  You have to hope like hell that Brook Lopez is A) healthy and B) willing to resign.  You also have to hope that you can convince a bunch of free agents that they'll be in the limelight in New York, even if the city reads "Brooklyn."  LeBron ain't leaving Cleveland.  If he doesn't leave, neither does Love.  Durant may stay in Oklahoma City, but if he doesn't, sounds like he's going to DC.  If he goes to DC, no reason for Beal to leave.  They could make a play for two of the big names, a la Cleveland getting Love and Lebron, but they have no third piece (Irving) and no hope of getting one, with only the Celts' pick the following year.  I have no doubt that there will be great players available who are stars now, but it could be an ugly season, particularly if they get no one and sign a bunch of vets with expiring contracts for the following year.  I'm thinking we are swapping picks with Philly in summer 2017 and getting a good one.

2017-18: Don't know.  Several big names, Rose, Griffin, Howard are UFAs this year.  The 2017 class looks strong, so I'm worried that they'll have cap room to bring in a couple of good players.  This will be their last year without a first-round draft pick, so if they have a lot of cash to spread around, they should be able to sign a couple of good young guys.

Okay, thoughts?

Mike

Suck is relative I suppose, though I think its safe to assume they will be far worse than we as c's fans would have though when the deal was first made.
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

I think they could end up being really bad this year. Williams, and KG are injury risks, and Brook Lopez is already hurt. Those are 3 of their best 4 players. If they have trouble staying healthy they could be really bad.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Hard to say, so much depends on how the new TV money effects the cap, if a new owner comes in, and the health of Brook Lopze/Deron/Joe Johnson.

I don't see how they get better, their talent is depreciating and they aren't really going to be in a position to add to it.

Yeah they built a ton of success playing "small" with Pierce/KG/JJ/Livingston/Deron at the core of it.

Now two key components of that lineup are gone and KG/JJ/Deron are a year older. Going to have to find a different way to win. Could fall apart like last year was trending till they got hot.

Bingo.

Brooklyn started sucking the moment they lost Paul Pierce.

I don't have high hopes for them.  I don't see a player that would attract other stars.

It really depends on Williams's ankles and Lopez's ability to stay on the floor. Joe Johnson's still an All Star caliber player, and even 15 minutes of past his prime KG is at least league average. Losing Blatche was a big loss, though.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

I believe Brooklyn will be a playoff team or near playoff team for the next 5 years at least.  They are in a major market, they like to spend money, and they have a number of quality players.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

If this nets team was 3-4 years younger when JJ, Dwill, KG, AK47, and Brook Lopez were younger and more importantly healthier, they would be right up there. Unfortunately that is not how it works.

Also, big markets do not equal big results. You can throw as much money at the Gilbert Arenas, Rashard Lewiss, joe johnsons, rudy gays, jr and josh smiths but they won't win. Ironically I think when big market teams that currently have a huge payroll and are not producing have huge targets on their backs. I'm glad I'm not a new york any team fan.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

Only so much money they can spend (and they went in the opposite directing this season as it is).

I still think they're better with Kidd as far away as possible. JK did not know how to use KG at all.
