in 2010,2011 and 2012 Bass was top 3 in the NBA in jumpshooting from 10-15 feet. For a few years there, it was basically a three way battle for the number one mid range jumpshooter in the NBA between Bass, KG and Nowitzki.
The KG+Bass duo was crucial for us in the 2012 ECF run throughout the playoffs and Bass+KG were actually #1 and #2 in the NBA for jumpshots from 10-15 feet.
Anyway, I do like trying to make him a better three point shooter. I think the corner three has the highest efficiency because it's the closest 3 point shot to the basket. (Correct me if I'm wrong).
I've always wondered how many more points KG would have gotten if he had taken a step backwards from all those 15-19 feet jumpshots that he was so good at. The one part of his game that never really developed. I guess his long range 2 point jumpshots were effective enough at dragging his opponent away from the basket that it became an after thought.
I do remember the pain Chris Bosh caused us in 2012 when he sat on the three point line as Bass tried to guard Lebron in games 6 and 7.
Those Bosh threes were daggers and Bass, Sully and Olynyk all getting that skill would be so valuable going forward.
Remember that the point of getting Bass to take this shot isn't just so he can hit the three and add it to his game (that's a nice benefit).
The aim behind it is to take Bass' opponent away from the basket so someone like Smart or Bradley can get to the rim without meeting a center and a power forward.
If Bass' opponent wants to cover Bass on the perimeter, then our wings have an easier time getting to the hole.
If Bass' opponent wants to sag off Bass and help defend on our wing while he drives, then Bass has a nice wide open look.
Again I'll go back to the 2012 ECF and KG having those 'pick your poison' decisions to make, when Lebron had Bass guarding him in game 7, and an exhausted KG had to decide whether to cover Bosh drifting out to the three point line, or protect the basket from Lebron driving.
KG did an excellent job and obviously chose to help on Lebron- Bosh was good enough to bury those corner threes. You just can't stop a tandem like that when they are firing.
