Wait, now I'm confused. Are we paying attention to context or not, because you seem oddly malleable about which way you lean.

If you want to hold Jackie Mac to the fire about the specific phrasing of something said off the air, that's your prerogative, I guess. It's just monumentally insipid.

However, the likelihood that she pulled that out of thin air is significantly lower than some posters here seem to believe. But we don't know, because we don't have anything to go off of beyond a single offhand statement taken in isolation.

Oh I see.   Off the air = can say whatever you want to colleagues.

Glad we cleared that up in 22 pages. That makes total sense.

I totally agree you are confused.

You might speak five languages, but you're clearly in the dark about how journalists talk about trades with each other.

Apparently not in English that the whole rest of the world can understand and with as little credibility as possible and not in context and uh...what else? Off handish...doesn't really count.  Wink wink nod noddy.  Gotcha.

Kinda like Charlie Brown's teacher   "Waaa waa waa wa  waaa. Moooooo"

How will we ever understand her? When she says "That's the truth" how are we possibly to understand that?  Without context maybe she was talking about Paul Pierce or something.

I think this discussion has lost its way a little, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  I think it is pretty clear that JM was implying that she had heard from someone that she believed that Rondo told the Celtics that he wants out which could mean trade me now or it could mean don't plan on me resigning.  I don't think she intended for this to get out but it did.

The important thing is whether it is true or not.  Both side have since come out with the obligatory denials, sort of.  Rondo's camp said he has not demanded a trade which could be true and he still wants out.

What I have concluded from this, which is my own opinion as you could conclude almost anything you want from this, is that Rondo does not care if he is traded or not because he is going to "test" FA at the end of the season no matter what.  Further, Rondo will not come back to the Celtics unless by some miracle we become a good team between now and then (that is the wants out part).

If you injected Rondo with truth serum, he would probably admit that he would rather play this season on a contender for the playoffs over a contender for the lottery but if he is on the team for the start of the season, I expect Rondo to be all in for the team.

There. Perfect common sense. How hard is that? Maybe you shoulda put it in big bold letters for some of us.

That is almost exactly what I said earlier (but it wasn't in big bold letters so I understand if you missed it):

So you're saying that you absolutely believe it's true that Rondo's told the team that he wants out of Boston?

I'm sure she's heard that from more than one person involved in no small way with the Celtics off the record. My suspicion is that the context is what LooseCannon brought up a while a go, that while Rondo would like to stay in Boston, he'd rather play for a contending team.

This is all inference, or 'common sense', though it is a far cry from the 'she made mistakes, she made it all up' spiel  some of us were spitting pages ago.

What's your background in journalism?

edit: I'm not jackie MacMullan.

I didn't miss what you said. I just think this thread is littered with people who were chastising Rondo supporters for questioning the veracity of Jackie's comment because of some mis-placed, knee-jerk emotional reaction to what she said, when none of the people who were doing the chastising seem to believe that Jackie's comment was true and accurate. She didn't make it up, she didn't make a mistake, but by the same token what she said is kinda sorta accurate if you add certain qualifiers to it. You're dancing on the head of a pin. You're doing it fairly well but that's still what you're doing.
