My suspicion is that Jackie can't get her bosses to sign off on a story about why and whether Rondo's departure is imminent because no one in the Boston front office is willing to go on the record about it beyond a 'no comment.'

That's not how it works.  Since when did her bosses let a "no comment" from a front office prevent them from running a story?

Which is more likely...

1.  Jackie has a piece of super juicy information that literally NO ONE ELSE ON EARTH HAS but they're not running with it.

2.  Jackie doesn't actually have any hard info and was just BS-ing.

Mike

Please, feel free to tell me exactly how this works.

Also, your two options are what could be kindly called 'gross mischaracterization'.  "Rondo wants to play for a contender" is an angle that McMullan has already taken in at least one story -- without anything more substantial it's not worth the extra space/digital ink. Nothing she's said is  'supersecret no one knows about it' info.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

2.  If all Jackie had said was "Rondo wants to play for a contender", this thread wouldn't exist.  She said Rondo "wants out" and has told the Celtics that.  There's a big difference between those two.  Has anyone else said Rondo "wants out"?

Using your demonstrably impressive powers of deduction, why do you think Rondo would have told the Celtics that he wants out? Why are you sticking so heavily to quotation when it comes to what is an off-the-cuff, not intended for broadcast piece of discussion? Isn't it more likely that the explicit "Rondo wants out of Boston" is exactly the evidence that Jackie's missing/keeping her from writing a piece like this?

To steal an example from the deadspin article, the reason people don't take Broussard seriously is because of tweets like this:
https://twitter.com/Chris_Broussard/status/304044629978935296

Without any actual statements, MacMullan would be, essentially, writing a Broussard tweet. There's a reason she just got honored by the Hall of Fame, and it's largely because she doesn't do that.

Now do you want me to pat you on your head, too?

"Rondo wants to play for a contender" isn't super-secret, but it's also not what she said. She said Rondo told the team he wants out. I haven't seen anyone reporting that he's definitively told the team he's leaving, so if she has any evidence that's occurred that would obviously qualify as  'supersecret no one knows about it' info.

Is it possible that jackie mac has become a hack and is nearing retirement? Jeter will be in the hall of fame and is a great player, but he can not even hit for doubles anymore. As another poster put it, maybe she has just lost her fastball?

Right, but she did it this time, which is why people are reacting like this.

Usually people don't discuss with people things people already know.  Or if they do they get nicknames like "Captain Obvious".   She wasn't stating things that were obvious. It was so unobvious that it became big enough news she had to back down somewhat and Rondo and his agent denied it. People don't usually deny or back down from things everybody knows.

That's how that works.

In fact "Rondo wants out. He has told the Celtics that" actually flew in the face of what he had said publicly, so it actually would count as super secret, which may be why she said it off the air. Presumably it was a secret she didn't want to discuss with the world. That's the way that usually works. Usually you don't tweet things out you don't want people to know and you do tweet out things you do want to tell people.

She also said Doc is done with Rondo and that Rondo drives him nuts. Given that nobody else had said that publicly that would also be secret info or at least confirm speculation.  This is why people are down on Jackie right now. Either she didn't tell Celts fans something we all would have been interested in (not cool Jackie!) orrrrr she sorta made something up and/or exaggerated (Not cool Jackie!). That's why, fair or not, Jackie is getting some Broussard treatment right now. That's how things like that work.

It's a leeeeetle like when a politician says something like "That's guy's a jerk" and don't realize the microphone is on. Human mistake that you get some flack for. That's how it works.

I just think it's interesting how some positions are given credence and others are dismissed as 'inside information' when the only substantial difference in credibility seems to be a poster's own emotional relationship to the reporter's statement.

Including your own opinions, no doubt.

Not from my perspective.  D.o.s. seems to be an exceptionally level-headed character, especially in these turbulent parts.;)  At least he doesn't reflexively "defend" his own statements simply because he made them.  That can get pretty tiresome after a while, so I think it's great that he doesn't participate in that kind of stuff...

He does reflexively "defend" his own statements at times, though not as much as some. I think one of the tricks to not reflexively defending your statements is to put a little thought into your statement before you make it, which he's generally pretty good at.

As for this thread, though, isn't he some kind of journalist? Don't you think that might shape his opinion in a thread that's focused quite a bit on the veracity of the comments of another journalist?

I just love the fact that you answered me with a straight face... :)
