Okay, this is what I was thinking of with verbal agreements vs. official signings.

So verbal agreements do count as cap hold except when made during July moratorium, as these verbal agreements are, in which case they do not count as a cap hold.

These types of moves are the norm in the NBA but drive me crazy. The celtics did alot of this prior to last season. They fill open roster spots with past prime players who have good basketball IQs but their body's are on the decline. These teams struggle through the grind of the regular season and hope to be healthy come playoff time.

I say build a 5-6 man vet rotation then build a secondary rotation of younger guys who are hungry to get a foot hold in the league and will play hard on the nights the vets need rest. Not to harp on the obvious but the Spurs have been one of the few teams to subsidize their stars with youth. Not including Leonard who was a home run they brought in players like mills, green and splitter to eat up minutes and save their stars.

Finally re-read a lot of Coon's Salary Cap FAQ and I got scared.

The MLE and BAE will technically turn into cap space for Granger and McRob if Bosh leaves and the Heat renounce a lot of their former players. Bosh leaving may mean space for a combination of Monroe/Gasol/Thomas/Ariza if the Heat renounce their players like Chalmers, Birdman, Battier, Beasley and others right?

7M for Granger and McRob, 3M for Cole and Napier, 20M for LBJ, 12-15M for Wade, 2M for empty roster spots = 16-19M in cap space.

Also, Granger is an Indy favorite. I know some fans who liked him almost as much as Reggie. I'm fairly certain most would have liked to see him go back on a discount, even if it limited even more of their already limited cap space. I can already see the bitterness.

Yeah, I'm pretty surprised that he'd go to Miami, especially after a report surfaced last year indicating that, after he was bought out, there was too much bad blood between Lebron, Wade, and Granger for Danny to sign there.  Bird never should have traded him.  That move might have cost Indiana a title.
