@brohrbach | 14 min 14 sec ago | Avery Bradley contract structure, per @EricPincus: $7.2M in 2014-15, $7.7M in '15-16, $8.3M in '16-17, $8.8M in '17-18. Plans to sign today.
With the new tv contract coming into play in a couple of years and the silly season stuff we've seen this off-season, this contract doesn't look bad at all as long as AB can maintain some health.
$8.8 in 2017 will not look that bad.
Disappointed in this structure. It would have been much better to front load this deal, especially given we're not title contending this year. If the contract gave Avery max decreases instead of max increases, the difference in 2017, when there could be a surge of cap room, was $1.8 million. Ainge really needs to pay more now to pay less later, and create room in the future.
That would compromise 2015 cap space which is the short term option Ainge has setup.
2017 is far enough way to plan around that extra 1.5 million. Plus you have it entirely wrong if the cap surges that much the difference becomes far less significant as its a small percentage of the cap.
It would compromise it by a whopping $600k. And if Ainge made a habit of offering decreasing contracts, it wouldn't matter anyway.
For someone who's so very concerned by 1800k you're very dismissive of a "whopping" 600k.
You know, I made my point in the rest of my post that you didn't quote. A little annoying if people jump into the conversation.
Again, my point was a) Danny should in general offer decreasing long-term contracts rather than increasing ones, which he has not done, and compromises future potential cap space at the expense of present cap space which he is not using. And b) I don't think Danny actually cared about 2015 cap space in this contract, as if he had, he could have structured it in a way that saved more in 2015 than he has.
That said, if Bogans, Babb, and Johnson are released, while Pressey is retained, the Celtics will have $5.26 million to spare before they hit the luxury tax. The MLE is $5.305 million. So if Danny is doing this to sign someone worthwhile with almost all of the MLE and stay under the tax, I'm on board. Otherwise, I think it's short-sighted.
