Boston Celtics: Landed a combo guard who could eventually replace Rajon Rondo with Marcus Smart and a plug-and-play wing who can cruise into a starting position if necessary. Smart is a risk because he can't hit from the outside and has shaky shot selection. But he's also strong as an ox and the Celtics defense only gets better with him on the floor. He can stuff stats and produce.

James Young can hit from the outside and right now is able to fill in a least admirably for Jeff Green even if he can't score to that degree. He can hit from the outside and get up and down the floor. It's a great combination for Boston, which has a really great young core to build around.

Now to figure out what to do with Rondo ...

What to do with Rondo? You keep him and play him next to Marcus Smart, who's a SG who can make plays.

Why would the Celtics use the 6th pick in the draft on a guard who needs the ball in his hands to be successful.... to have him play next to a PG who needs his ball in the hands to be successful? On a team that's more than likely headed to the lottery again?

And who on earth believes Rondo is going to hand over running the offense to Smart half the time? Think Ainge imagines that's gonna work?

Dude's getting traded.
because rondo wants to be on a contender, something we won't be for the next 5 years. Plus who else was there? Randle? The worse version of sully with only 1 post move and can't shoot from 1 side? Or vonleh, the overrated center who quit on Indiana?

we are in asset collection and rebuilding phase. Smarts ceiling is Dwayne wade. It was a no brainer.

People need to watch the NBA more I guess.

YOU CAN NOT HAVE 2 GUARDS ON THE COURT TOGETHER THAT CAN'T SHOOT!!!

Leaves no spacing and teams just clog the lane.

I hope Smart is a player, but I will say this for 1,000th time already:

RONDO AND SMART CAN NOT PLAY TOGETHER!!

I couldn't agree more. If the finals showed us anything this year it's that floor spacing is huge.

Both teams had rather excellent floor spacing. what's your point?
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

I don't think Rondo and Smart have to play together that much.  Start Rondo and Young and bring in Smart and Bradley for the first year.  I realize everybody expects a #6 pick to start, but Smart could be our 6th man this season.  Smart running the offense with Bradley cutting would be nice to see.

get rondo out of your head. Rondos probably won't be on this by the time were a contender again. If he is he'll be 33 and burned out from carrying us for so many years.

were not contenders, so why focus on rondo and smart? Why not focus on the backcourt of the future, which is smart+Young with Bradley subbing when needing defensive boost.

also stop calling young a SF, he's a swingman who primarily plays the 2 and guards the 2 and looks like a 2.

smart is not a shooting guard. He is a point guard who can score. If rondo and smart play at the same time, it would be a flex option with 2 PGs playing, one just happens to be able to play like a 2 when needed.

1.  Rondo's shooting has improved a lot since he got into the league.  There's no reason to think Smart's won't as well.

2.  I absolutely HATE that people are absorbing this idea from the stat heads that there's one and only one way to play basketball.  Floor spacing is important.  You know what else is?  Having a three guard rotation that might be the toughest defensive unit in the league by a country mile.

Rondo can hit shots if teams leave him alone. Smart hasn't played a minute of nba ball yet. I'd wait and see what happened before I threw in the towel.

So this is what we tanked for?  Well at least we got a good pick at 17. Looks like Danny would have learned his lesson with Marcus Banks.

+1  I believe either Rondo or Smart is going. If Rondo, strap in for year 2 of the tank.

The Finals also showed that the drive-and-kick-out game can win you a championship.  Smart is an excellent driver to the basket that defenses will have to respect.  And his passing ability is top-notch.

Smart driving to the hole and collapsing the defense, then kicking out to Green and Olynyk for a three would be a thing of beauty.
