A previous story by Andy Katz says:
The Sacramento Kings are fielding offers from three teams for the No. 8 pick in Thursday's NBA draft, sources with direct knowledge told ESPN on Monday.
Sources said the Kings have two deals that could be done prior to Thursday's 2 p.m. ET trade deadline to change the draft order and one would be a draft night deal, depending on which players are available when the Kings select.
The three deals would return multiple draft picks and a veteran player to the Kings for the No. 8 pick.
What if the Celtics are offering #17, Jeff Green, and a future pick or picks for #8?
Maybe it depends on if someone like Embiid drops to #6 and Ainge thinks the guy he was targeting at #6 will still be there at #8 instead of being drafted by the Lakers (or whoever the Lakers trade to #7) or if he thinks that a player he likes is too much of a reach at #6 but not at #8 and won't be available at #17.
What if the goal is to have a starting lineup of Embiid, Sullinger, McDermott, Bradley, and Rondo?
I could easily imagine that Boston is offering the better deal, but has more conditions based on who is available at #6 and #8.
I was thinking something similar. And I think it would be a great move to make. I'd love that lineup you just mentioned. Especially if we still have KO as a solid backup PF, and then sign a cpl more shooters off the bench. Maybe a backup center too, in case Fav doesn't pan out.
But the only thing that gets me with the potential trade you mentioned, is...didn't Rudy Gray already opt in with the Kings for the final yr of his nearly $20m per yr contract? I can not, in any scenario, see the Kings taking on Jeff Green if they keep Rudy Gay. That would tie up nearly $30m in cap space just at SF spot. Even though Gay only has 1yr left on his contract, I still don't see the Kings investing that much cap space on one position.
But who knows. If the Kings like Jeff Green, maybe a deal like Green, Bass, & #17 for Gay and #8 might work.
Edit-- Forgot to mention, I'm sure the Celts would need to send over a Future 1st as well.
Maybe throwing in the 2015 Clips pick would be enough to get it done.
This deal would give the Kings a starting caliber SF at reasonable money for 2 more yrs. Jeff Green makes half the money Gay does, and he is a better defender than Gay is. The Kings could have Green for the next 2yrs at the same money Gay is about to make for 1season. As for Bass, he would give the Kings at PF that would stretch the floor and open up space for Cousins to work. Bass would also be a solid defender to play next to Cousins in the lineup- Bass is a better defender than any of the current PFs the Kings have. And if Bass doesn't work out for them, his contract expires next summer anyways.
This deal could make a lot of sense for Boston too. Giving up Green and Bass for Gay isn't ideal, considering the fact that many people would consider Green an all-around better player than Gay, at half the price. However, it is worth taking on Gay's bloated contract for 1yr to acquire that 8th pick. Rondo and Gay are also very close friends, so the move might make Rondo happy. And who knows...maybe if Gay starts playing better defense like he used to and maybe if his efficiency improves, he would be worth re-signing at a significant paycut next summer. If not, his contract expires right in line with when Boston has a ton of Cap Space next summer. No harm done.
