For those that want to build through the draft, what happens when these players we pick high end just being glorified role players and nothing more?
My fear is, we miss out on Love and then trade Rondo/Green, and build through the draft...
That start right there leaves us with 20 wins. A lot of building to do.
The rookies we draft, unless a generational player, will take 2-4 years to really develop and like I said most likely will peak as role players.
The chances of landing a LBJ or KD is slim and if you don't, at best, we turn into the Pacers where we suck for 4 years then finally have it together only to find out they aren't good enough but overpaid their players and will only get worse. The Pacers built through the draft and they peaked as a semi-finalist.
That's a better case scenario in my head, outside of landing a all-time player, then there's the Bobcats way. Where we draft and draft and draft, use all the picks and they all underachieve or are role players and we have a HUGE road to get back.
Look at all the teams how built through the draft.... OKC, Indy, POR, CHAR, CLEV, WASH, MINN, DEN, UTAH...... Portland has hit consistently in the draft and could be contending by next year but probably not... OKC is on the cusp but also has a generational guy (KD) and a very good PG... Washington is looking up but really... They don't have enough unless Wall turns into a Westbrook or Paul... Indy has a star, George, and rest are role players and they aren't good enough...
The rest are stuck in mediocrity until they strike gold in the draft.
Love and Rondo makes us a winning team while also becoming a decently attractive place to come and be competitive. Also, in a love deal, we aren't losing ALL the picks. So I don't see an issue.
