It is so difficult to build a team through trades and free agency. Most long runs at championships come from teams that drafted their best player. The Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Bulls, Rockets, Spurs, Lakers are examples of this.
The exception to the rule is the 76ers in 1983, Boston 2008, and the Heat in 2012, 2013.
So, from 1980 to 2014 88% of the NBA championship got their best player in the draft.
The Kevin Love trade reminds me of the Suns trading for Barkley when he was 29. The Suns were already a good team but the window closed on them quickly. They kept trying to add another player to get them over the hump including Danny Manning but the window proved to be too small for that team. It turned out the Rockets with Hakeem broke into the Bulls run.
Don't get me wrong, that was a great time to be a Suns fan. Kevin Love and Rondo would be fun to watch here and the team would be good. It is just unlikely they would be champions.
Also, building through the draft can be fun. Some of the best young players will be on your team. There is nothing like watching a star emerge. To me, it is much better than renting an established star.
