No.
I don't want the next incarnation of the C's to just be competitive, I want them to be dominant, dynastic, an historically great team. You get there by having a transcendent player on your team, a once in a generation kind of talent. I just don't believe Kevin Love is that guy. Neither is anyone currently on the Celtics' roster, so by definition they are all expendable, even KO. Sorry, guys, but face it. KO is not the man. He's a nice little player at best. Before he even came here, you knew Bird was a special player. Dude averaged 21 and 10 and shot 40% from 3 in his first season playing 36 minutes a game. KO is NOT the man. Let's have some standards, please.
Getting back to Kevin Love, I'm not saying he isn't good, but I am saying he's not "the one." In light of that, I don't want to give up any assets to acquire Kevin Love if those assets might be otherwise used to obtain that player (through the draft or trade or considerations received when moving those assets), unless Kevin Love is going to be subsequently flipped to get him. I don't even want to acquire Love to "keep Rondo from leaving" because Rondo+Love is not a championship tandem anyway, so why bother? And I say that even though I truly enjoy having Rondo on the team. Because seriously, I have no reason to believe that even Playoff Rondo is enough to consistently power this team through the playoffs for years to come.
And years to come is the key piece here. The latest run was nice, but it only lasted about 5 years, and it had a big hole in the middle where KG's knee went south on us. The Bird teams gave us a decade+, Russell gave us 13 seasons and won his first and his last years in. I want to see them build up that trophy count and put some cushion between them and the Lakers.
So I hate to say it, but I think I'm at the point where I'm all in for an controlled demolition. I wouldn't just trade players away for pennies on the dollar, but at this point I'd say the primary goals should be clearing cap and stockpiling assets. No to Love.
