I thought the early goal ruined the contest.

Germany sat back for most of the game. Created very very little until these final few moments of the game (shocking miss by Schurrle!). Got the job done but performance was unimpressive. Very fortunate to get that early goal. Could've been in trouble otherwise.

France were poor. They were set up to counter attack. To defend compactly and then hit long balls up to forwards trying to break Germany's high defensive line. The minute they went down a goal, Deschamps should have switched to a more proactive mode of attack. France needed someone who could get on the ball in the final third and link play together. Be incisive passer.

This is where France's team selection really hurt them. Well and the injury to Ribery. Ribery would have been perfect for this situation with Valbuena playing supporting role. And Cabaye and Pogba linking things from deeper. But no Ribery and no replacement on bench as creative passer in final third. Griezmann different type of wide player than Ribery. This is where Nasri would have been so valuable but not selected. Or even someone like Gourcouff or Marvin Martin. Or Grenier. Deschamps needed this type of player but had nobody to call upon. Too defensive minded (counter attacking) team selection.

Anyway, I thought the game was pretty much over after that first goal. Bad goal to concede. You don't want to be losing to headers from that area from set pieces that far from goal. Once that happened, Germany created little and France didn't have the players to break them down. Neither team did much. France had a little better of play but neither team looked like worthy winners. Fairly middling game from then on.

Unbelievable.

I was lying on my bed, ready to watch the game, and just as the match was about to start, I fall asleep. Woke up just as the game ended, in time to hear the post game interviews.  ::)

Thanks for the write-up, Who.

Uhm, semi-finals, yeah!
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

Surprised to see Freddy Guarin start. Aguilar been playing well.

Guarin undependable and erratic. Can be a match winner. Can be highly irritating.

Hmm ... no Henrique. I thought Scolari would opt for him as defensive midfielder. It'll be interesting to see how Paulinho and Fernandiho play together. Struggled in a friendly a few months ago. Maicon in for Dani Alves too. I wonder if Maicon was chosen due to his size. Maybe figured he stood a better chance in one-on-ones with Ibarbo who is a big fellow.

Lazy play by Maicon. Didn't bother to run back. Left his teammates completely exposed. Thiago Silva lone man back 1-on-3 makes the tackle to save Brazil's rear end.

Looks like the ref needs to get ahold of this game a bit better.  Things starting to look a bit contentious out there.

Brazil are surprisingly good at getting shots in on goal for a team with little creativity in midfield.

Brazil's pressing in midfield has completely disrupted Colombia's short passing game.

Aghh ... do not like that free kick. Fernandinho's foot was just as high as the Colombia's players foot. No foul there. Both with equally high foot. Colombia better not get a goal from this. Right on edge of penalty area. Centrally placed. Brilliant area for free kick.

Update: Phew. No goal.

This ref is just bad.  No control of this game at all.

Why even bother with the aerosol spray, if you're going to completely ignore the players disregarding it?

Clear yellow card there.  This is comical.

Which is sad, because otherwise this has been a very entertaining game.

Brazil passing the ball around much more confidently today. That early goal has taken all the pressure off of them.

Yeah, they seem far more relaxed than in any other game so far in the tournament.

Can't be easy being the home nation, in such a soccer crazy nation as Brazil.
