Good job, U.S. Nice defense in the clutch.  ::)

On the bright side, you still have a good chance of advancing past the group stage
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

So...

We win = advance

We draw = advance

We lose = need Ghana/Portugal to draw

Tell Klinsmann to call up Germany and tell them about the plan!

Yeah, my understanding is a draw between Germany and the US means both teams advance.

Hopefully the 'fix' is already in.

Ties are trash. There's a reason this sport is an afterthought in this nation and that's it. The end.

Will take the first round of these playoffs in the NBA with all the OTs ANY DAY over this.

If I'm not mistaken it's even better than that.

We lose + Ghana win = we advance due to beating Ghana head-to-head  EDIT: Looks like goal differential comes first, so Ghana would need at least a 2-goal swing in goal margin, which would have to happen for us to lose and Ghana to win in the first place.

We lose + Portugal win = we advance as long as the margins aren't big enough to allow Portugal to make up the 5 goal advantage in net goals that we currently have.

More knowledgeable World Cup fans - is this right?

If he didnt do it already.

Let me get it straight, please help me out.

If we lose to Germany, and Ghana wins by 2 goals, we're done right?

Great cross by Ronaldo, and the press will likely be singing his praises, but it would've been meaningless if the two nearby U.S. defenders had simply marked the Portugal player--they could've intercepted the ball easily.

I think this U.S. team has the same problem as the New Big Three Celtics had ... always letting off the gas pedal when they have a lead. And it always makes their road harder.

Take this somewhere else. You came into a World Cup thread to hate on soccer. What's the point of that?

That's the Ronaldo effect.

I think it will go the same with Messi and Suarez. Portugal needs a goal, desperately and the ball was in the feet of one of the greatest goal scorers, ever. All the focus went to him, and Ronaldo, to his credit, saw Varela coasting (rather easily too) and kicked a beauty of a cross, right smack dab in front of the net.
