I'm not as enamored with the Brooklyn picks as everyone else seems to be. We have their picks from now until 2018 (except 2015) but honestly they have Deron Williams, Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez signed through 2015/16 and Williams for another year after. They will be major players in FA as they are in the largest media market, have a billionaire owned and they have some good young players in Teletovic and Plumlee. We got four 1st rounders in the BKN trade (really three 1sts and the right to swap in 2017). I'm willing to give up the one in 2016 at least.
I'd be surprised if they were a lotto team in more than one of those years. Barring a Williams injury those picks will be mid-round 1sts.
So if that is the rub on these deals for Love I'm more than happy to swap in that BKN pick. I think LarBrd's suggestion of five 1sts, Sully and KO is too much. That is shakes out to seven 1sts for Love and with no guarantee that he will resign in in 2015/16. I'm not giving up that much for 1 year of Rondo/Love, even if Ainge can magically convince Melo to spurn the NYK and come here (which he won't). The smart $ is on Melo staying in NY.
Here is a deal I concocted in the trade machine:
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=pf9glazHere me out on this, because I know it looks like a windfall for us and dregs for the others.
MIN receives #6, LAC 2015 1st, BOS 2015 1st and the right to swap with us in 2016.
PHI receives PHI 2015 1st, 2016 MIA 2nd and cash considerations
So essentially MIN gets 3.5 first round picks, KO and $14M in cap space for Love and Martin. PHI gets the rights to their 2015 1st back as well as a 2nd from MIA and some cash to pay Wallace. They also, and this is important, get another key tanking piece this year. Wallace is a pro at playing minutes and having nothing to show for it. He also gets them pretty close to the salary floor which is a concern for them...I guess.
Additionally this trade actually gives us some $ to pay AB if we want as well as setting us up with a lineup of:
Rondo
Martin
Green
Love
Sully
AB
Lavine (or whoever @ #17)
Obviously we have to take a swing at getting Asik/Gortat/Monroe this off-season or drafting Porzingis, Capella or Nurkic at #17. We'd have some $ to work with actually. Our squad including the #17 pick is only about $58 in salary once we renounce the non-guarantees.
I think we could offer HOU cap space for Asik using the TPE. I know the player's salary has to be lower than the TPE but Asik's cap hit for 2014/15 is only $8,374,646 which is well in range. I'd have to CBA check that but I think it's true. Another option might be Pau Gasol on a short deal.
I think 3.5 picks is probably the best offer Minnesota will get for a year of Love. It's a lot but with his interest in Boston it seems to be worth the gamble. Moving Wallace's deal is a side bonus and isn't necessary as seen here:
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=nja2gzq. They just have to take Joel Anthony in that scenario.
