didn't wyc say they would pay the luxury tax if they had to?

Yeah I've heard him say that in interviews. I think if they can build a team that gets deep into the playoffs, that helps pay the tax they'd end up paying. More games, more money for the owners. Couldn't blame them for going over if they make out.

"Basketball reasons"...I hope this isn't David Stern (or Adam Silver now) behind it!

Yep, Wyc has always said he'd pay extra for a contender.

so why are we concerned about "getting" melo and Love and being under the cap?

Because it'd be nice to have legal transactions under the CBA if we're discussing hypothetical scenarios.

Its not the salary cap that people are talking about, its the hard cap that is put in place when you receive a player in a sign and trade.

While I don't think that they'll be making a ton of money with playoff appearances if they've triggered the repeater tax -- totally suspicion on my part -- I do know that the Celtics ownership is 100% onboard with paying the luxury tax over multiple seasons if the team is in a place to make runs at championships.

We all know and trust that Wyc and co. are willing to "pay to play."

When you talk about "not making a ton of money," you are presumably using that phrase in very relative terms.

Once Wolves hire coach, they'll likely try to sell Love again on a vision and direction. For now, his stance hasn't changed: He wants out.

Timberwolves are discussing Kevin Love trade scenarios w/ teams, but made it clear deal's unlikely until they've hired a coach. sources say.

Man, if the Wolves end up hiring Del Negro, that is one tough sell.

Also, I wonder what kind of coach would take the job knowing that chances are less than 50/50 that Love is coming back?

Interesting. Have to think moving Love has an enormous impact on a choice of coach. Trying to get to the playoffs and rebuilding are very different, you'd think having clarity of their roster would allow them to figure out what coaching direction to go.

Whatever coach they hire that's not named Phil Jackson, he won't stay.

Come to Boston, now.  ;D

Highly doubt a coach is going to change K. Love's mind. Trade the guy already.
