He has looked great in his rehab partial season this year.  I'd say he is playing at 80% now and is easily a top ten point guard right now.  This season is practice for next year (with draft picks for it)
"The kid" is currently the second best point guard to ever suit up for the celtics.  Only mr Robert Cousy stands in his way so it puzzles me how many here  will complain about his game.  Poor dj would have been torn apart by many here.

He's just about about averaging his career numbers except with better percentages from the line and 3, both of which are hopefully permanent improvements. He has looked good though, still a long ways before he's 100%.
He's playing about as well as he's ever played.  It's a great thing.  I wouldn't hold your breathe on him playing much better than this.
Lol man, the goal posts keep on shifting on how good he's going to be post injury. Considering how poorly he's shooting around the rim, a clear indicator of rustiness, and that he's still only played 15 games....I'll hold my breath on more improvement.
So far his season averages are about what I expected.  His averages for the month of February are far better than I expected.  Here's hoping he continues to improve.

That would be AMAZING if Rondo transformed overnight from shooting 28% from three, 55% from FT to suddenly a 37% three point shooter and 76% ft shooter...

Is there any precedent of a player going from bad shooter to good at age 28?

Wouldn't you say that his numbers from February and the first game of March are likely to be more indicative of what we'll see from Rondo going forward than the numbers from January where he was clearly laboring to find his game and rhythm out on the court after a one year hiatus from basketball?

I don't think he's likely to continue to be a 37% three point shooter for the rest of his career, but I do think that there's a good chance that he can be an above 70% free throw shooter from here on out.

I also see signs that there is still another level he can take his game to.  The explosiveness doesn't quite look all the way back, but it's getting closer and closer.

I'm am, so far, very excited by what I've seen from "past his prime" Rondo.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
i think he looks terrific.  Looks like a top 5 PG this past month. I don't really think he's going to get much better than this.

We're still losing most our games, though... need some hall of famers around him if we want to win 40+ games.
He's still working his way back physically from the injury I think he'll get a lot better
I doubt it.  He's shooting career high percentages over the past month.  That's not going to last.  He might get a bit more explosive, but I think what you're seeing here is pretty much what we can expect... which is pretty darn good.

I'd usually agree but his shooting percentages have never been any good except for his 10 feet jumpshot %.
When you're a terrible overall shooter and you improve your form/work on your shot for 9 months on one leg, it's not out of the ordinary to expect him to become at least an average overall shooter from 10,15,23 feet and three point/free throw land.
Who knows, hopefully he's become a good shooter with this time off and nothing else to do.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Except this is not  true.

First, Rondo has never really shot 10-foot jump shots (and when he did, he was pretty horrible at it). He works at/close to the rim, or from 16 feet out.

Second, he was a pretty decent 16-foot shooter last season already. His main problem was lack of reliable three point range, and complete absence of free throw shooting ability.

He's been as decent on his jump shots this year as he was last year (and the three-point shooting has certainly improved), but his finishing at the rim has been atrocious. Perhaps it's still an issue of playing himself back into shape, or perhaps it will never be back at all. But that's what it is. I'll withhold judgement on the free-throw shooting when  the sample is bigger than 27 shots.

Small guards don't really shoot 10 foot jump shots much. Too close to the rim and the trees patrolling it. Basically at that range you're looking at a floater if you're a small guard.

Rondo hasn't really ever added a floater, though he did try occasionally a few years ago.

I am confident that Rondo does improved his shooting
it is one thing that once you got it you won't go back

At this point I can't fathom trading Rondo for anything other than Lebron, Durant and a few select others. He is so unique and amazing and has more heart than anyone in the league. He makes the game look so easy especially for his teammates.

Remember when people said he'd suck without KG and PP? You know who you are.

The average fg% for starting point guards in 2012 and 2013 from 16-23 feet was just over 39%. Rondo's been 39% or higher 5 of the last 6 years before this year. He's probably a little better than average over his career.

Rondo going from career 62% FT shooter to 70+ would be epic for his career.  It would completely transform the kind of impact he can have in late game situations.  It would be huge.  So far this season he's shooting 74%.  That would be epic if he's actually improved that dramatically at this stage of his career.

Not counting the MIA game (1-4) he's hitting 82.6%.

Also went 0-8 from the field in that MIA game. Past 10 games he's .444 from the field.

I personally give him a pass for his first several games because he's adjusting.
