like someone else pointed out, this will just make it more impossible to trade him in the future.

It doesn't change anything.  He's still just a contract.  He's useful enough that plenty of playoff teams would be happy to have him on a minimum deal, but for trade purposes, it doesn't change that his play on the court is mostly irrelevant for any deal involving him.

I think it's time for him to think about if he wants to continue playing basketball. Maybe he can retire and get his contract off the books.

I seriously doubt Wallace is going to leave $20 million on the table to give up basketball at 31.

I've pointed out a few times that the best shot at getting his salary off the books is to play enough so that he gets enough concussions to force his retirement for medical reasons.  (If a doctor ruled favorably, he would still be paid, but it wouldn't count against the cap.)

classy

How is this ok for the forum? Wishing a career ending injury on one of our players, and not just that, but a head based career ending injury that is associated with lifelong pain and depression. This forum is usually better than this.

I'm not wishing injury on him, just pointing out that his contract is quite toxic so that a medical retirement seems more likely than Wallace being traded before he becomes an expiring contract.

Pretty slippery slope you are on there. Saying the "best shot" to "play enough" and "get enough concussions" followed by an outcome you view as desirable (getting his salary off the books) definitely suggests you wouldn't be unhappy if this happened. Why bring up repeated head injuries? I suggest you just take your comments off the board cause they are embarrassing to celtics fans.

Too bad. He plays hard, and his production lately has been solid. Guess this gives more time for CJ and Babb.

I've already accepted the fact that will be with us until his contract is expiring. He's not worth 10M per year but he's actually a good influence for the kids with his hustle and he's been playing very good since Rondo came back. Right now I'm a big Wallace fan hope he recovers and has a good year next year.

I think he will be bought out or danny will use the stretch provision. It could be an ok situation for danny in that if he drafts one of the many talented sfs, they can come off the bench and compete with green , making him a better player or increase his trade value

Why on earth would Danny want to stretch GW's contract?

If we are planning to contend in 2-4 years, the value of cap room will be exponentially higher then than it is now.

I'm still going to buy a Wallace Jersey, I think.

I can see the possibility of stretching Wallace as part of a series of moves to clear the cap space necessary to sign a max free agent (or acquire one via trade).  Even if the Celtics spend picks to move guys, it might be necessary to stretch Wallace if Ainge wanted to sign Carmelo Anthony (and Melo wanted to come to Boston).

If we need the room to acquire someone or something big it'll happen, but only then.

I would be shocked if this happens before his final season, unless it coincides with other moves to get a lot of cap space this summer (which is unlikely).  All that would do is make the team worse, take away a future asset (his contract will be very tradable after next season), and will take away cap space for 5 years into the future.

I read the idea as suggesting Danny would want to waive him in the near future, and without any concrete plan for how to use the room.

If you're talking summer of 2015, sure, I suppose you can concoct a scenario when we'd stretch him as part of a deal that's the final piece of the puzzle, though I agree with Chris that even then it's hard to imagine.

But now, without such a deal in hand, it makes no sense to me.

He can be waived with the stretch provision, not bought out. The difference is that waiving someone means you're on the hook for the full salary, buying them out means you're on the hook for whatever the agreed buyout is.

This is why you keep your mouth shut and do your job, Keith Bogans. Minutes falling like manna from heaven right now, probably shouldn't have lit that bridge on fire.

I think the Celtics should really consider sparking up buyout talks.

If he retired that would be gigantic. HE doesn't get paid if he hangs them up?
