I think it depends on who's interested and, more importantly, who they can put around him. I personally have faith in Danny that we will get some good pieces sooner rather than later, but again my career isn't dependent on it.

I think if it's between the Celtics and another "rebuilding" team, then he would choose to stay with us because of our stock of picks/trade assets.

But there will be a lot of teams looking to pick him up, it all depends on what they have that Boston doesn't.

but he has not shown the ability to bring a team to the playoffs by himself.
Peak level KG in 2004-2005 coming off an MVP season couldn't get his team the playoffs by himself.

If you standard is get your team to the playoffs by himself then you're going to trade every player who isn't LBJ/Bird. Heck you might even be trading one of those players depending on the year, conference, and how bad your supporting cast is.

We're talking about the East here...that's not too hard of a task for a "star player" to do

If a really fantastic opportunity arose, I would leave.

Otherwise, I would stay, sign a max contract, and if things didn't work out, force a trade later.

I do think Rondo needs to see what's out there, jumping to the Knicks or some other crappy situation is probably less appealing than Boston even if it fully commits to the youth movement.

But given the number of teams with cap space I think it'd be shocking if there aren't a few good situations for him. The C's plan is to be one of those teams so they can get Rondo + another player by all reports. Or if Rondo leaves you have the options to figure it out from there.

It's a risky proposition for sure as there will likely be many teams with cap space in 2015.

It's so tough to gauge Ainge, but I'm not sure he wants to enter that summer with the possibility of losing Rondo for nothing.
Honestly with the new CBA this is the new reality for ALL NBA teams. You can't sign lucrative extensions anymore, your stars are going to be FAs no matter what you do now after their first big deal.

So you've got to adapt beyond just moving a guy with a year left on his deal. Most contracts are only 4 years, some are 5 and you can't get those extensions like you used to.

True. That's a good point.

What was the reasoning behind this when it was put in the new CBA?
The league wants more player movement to help with parity and the ability to turn teams around more quickly. The goal was to reduce the incumbent team's overwhelming advantages so FA could provide similar hope that the draft does for star players.

Player movement was one of the NBAs big non-revenue related goals this CBA negotiation.

The owners wanted to be saved from themselves and be forced to offer shorter contracts than before.

If I were Rondo, I'd stay unless something perfect came along. Something perfect involves equal or better contract dollar value and length, a fantastic roster than suited me well, a solid organization and a window that looks viable for at least 5 years out.

Personally, I think that perfect opportunity for Rondo is unlikely to materialize . .. and even if it does, I believe the C's will really give him something to think about.

The C's have the solid organization, the history (and Rondo's history), a rabid sport market, some decent young players and a plethora of trade chips / picks.

That said, I bet Rondo takes his time seeing what the landscape looks like before signing with anyone, most likely the C's.

Its not just the shorter contracts LooseCannon, they also made it so extensions are no longer as lucrative compared to hitting FA.

Now they did make it so sign and trades don't give you same money to maintain some incumbent advantage, but overall they clearly wanted more player movement to go with the shorter contracts.

It feels good to be the face of the franchise, and he said that he doesn't like big changes too, so I think he'll prefer staying in Boston.

I believe Danny will somehow pull a rabbit from his hat and surround some stars around him in the next couple of years. With that plethora of draft picks, the future of celtics looks pretty fine and it's gonna be a quick rebuild. If I were Rondo, I would have faith in Danny and the team, much like how Dirk who stayed with the Mavs for his whole career and finally got a ring for it.

I think the Dirk situation was different for a number of reasons. The luxury tax rules were different, he wasn't constantly involved in trade rumors (afaik), the formula for being a contender wasn't a "super team" just yet, and the Mavs never languished with a poor record or a roster built for a poor record. Writing this on my iPad so I haven't double checked any stats but from what I remember, the Mavs never became cellar dwellers ever since Dirk rose to prominence. (Although it's likely that Dirk played a big role in that)

When KG stuck with Minnesota through their terribleness, he was called loyal to a fault. As in, it was poor judgement.

If you're super-loyal and never win, your career is a what-if, a cute ancedote.

If you leave and win, you're a winner.

Rondo's already got a ring, KG didn't have one.

That's not actually correct, though, because the home team can still offer you a much more massive contract. The new CBA was to restrict player movement, the decreased contract extensions and limitations on S&T were to counteract a situation like Carmelo and Denver, where he essentially held the franchise hostage by refusing to be traded to any team other than New York via his mammoth contract extension.

'Melo and his agent were able to use that unsigned contract extension as leverage in negotiating his departure from the Nuggets, and the NBA owners were pretty furious over that.

Rondo will not get the biggest deal in Boston. This is what I hope anyways. He's a Josh Smith level player (Atlanta version). Meaning he's a great role player on a title team or even a 3rd-4th option but you cannot build a successful team around him, cannot be done. Give me all of your reasoning of "Playoff Rondo" because of the amazing way he played vs the 8th seed Sixers or the Rose-less Bulls etc..

Funny, none of Rondo's detractors seem to have any idea we were missing 2 players with heart problems, both of our shooting guards were too injured to play effectively and PP was battling a mcl problem but they vividly remember all of the players missing from our opponents. Put all the teams at full health that year and we'd have gone farther than we did.

There is no way Rondo gets a max deal, that's 100+M for 5 years. He is good but he's not THAT good.

If I was Rondo and made it to FA, I would only stay in Boston if the team was starting to look really good.  I don't think the team will be looking very good after just one more full season.  Rondo will go I think.  Hard to say who will have cap space to sign him and what options he will have but there should be some options available.

If I were the Celtics, I would push hard for an extension this summer and if he didn't take it, I would trade him for worry that leave for nothing in the end.
