Sort of. I feel like this is more on the Jackie Robinson makes it to the MLB end of the spectrum than the Matsui becomes first Japanese player to with World Series MVP.
Eh, there are similarities, but it's tempered by the fact that everyone knows Collins isn't the first gay athlete, just the first to be open while playing, and that unlike with Robinson there has been basically zero controversy amongst the league itself.
I'm very (pleasantly) surprised no player or ex-player has so much as tweeted something stupid about it or anything like that. No one really seems to care, except to briefly note that it's a nice milestone for gay people. That type of reaction is a much more heartening sign than a constant microscope.
