Chamberlain--most dominating big man ever
Russell--most dominating defensive player ever
Jordan--most dominating, other than C, player ever
Bird/Magic--(split image)single handedly revived a dying NBA game, at the time, with the most innovative, creative passing the game has EVER seen. Made passing, and assists, COOL again!!

Also, if I had to add another image, it wouldn't be LeBrons', it would be one for the greatest coach of all time---Red Auerbach!  Hands down!

And to those who would say Phil Jackson--what a joke---Red put his teams together(greatest GM, too!), and then coached them to greatness! He didn't just look around to see who had the best players, and THEN decide to coach them!

Agreed. Those would have to be my NBA Mount Rushmore.

Actually, on the actual Mt Rushmore, Jefferson needs to be removed, as he's a better writer than a President.

http://www.dailylounge.com/the-daily/entry/presidential-superlatives-the-most-overrated-presidents

"Of all the United States Presidents, however, Thomas Jefferson is easily the most overrated, largely due to the eloquence of his rhetoric and to his prestige as one of America’s founding fathers (especially for writing the Declaration of Independence). Unfortunately, his record as President is mediocre across the board: though he made the major acquisition of the Louisiana Purchase, he also effectively crippled the Navy, killed overseas trade via the 1807 Embargo Act, supported slavery and forceful Indian removal, and was often caught in the awkward position of using federal power to accomplish his goals even as he forcefully argued against the expansion of the powers of the federal government."

You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

Mt. Rushmore was for American icons, of which Jefferson is one.  Sure the 4 icons selected were Presidents, but they are still all icons.

i would probably go with russell, jordan, wilt....

the last is a toss up between bird and magic.  when the two were in their prime, id give the nod to larry, but spanning the entire career, id have to go with magic

Agree, but at least LeBron had Bird.....HOWEVER....this self proclaimed King who might "have to move one of his four off" to be replaced by HIM, this self proclaimed NBA scion and "historian" didn't have Russ?

I just heard a Russ stat that I hadn't heard before on CSSNE: Russ was involved in 21 win or go home games in his career. His record in those 21 games?

21-0....Glad Russ told this court jester off at the All-Star game!

Bump for Kareem coming to Russell's defense.

He also added:

"I don't think any of the big men playing today could have coped with the big men of that era. Wilt would have crushed those guys."

Quote
"LeBron has to re-think that. He needs to go and do some research and watch some old film, and hopefully he'll be impressed."

LeBron seems to consistently pick players he admires for stuff like this, which consistently are wings or big PGs.  Guys with games or positions that mirror his.

Honestly with this sort of "greatest ever" stuff, if you're a star the only winning move is not to play.  You're always gonna tick somebody off, and the media and fans are always looking for some fresh outrage.

"Today's players have a very limited perspective on the game".

Right on, Kareem.

Just my sense from a lot I've read is that much of today's players thinks NBA history starts with Bird/Magic/Jordan.

Granted a lot of these guys were born in the 80s and 90s, so it'd be only natural to sorta think that way but they are seriously dicounting guys that played before that era.

Hard not to, with the way the NBA keeps a relatively tight lid on the footage from back then.

Even with their incredibly lax youtube policy (I just found a Wilt/Kareem battle from 72 in its entirety) I think that they should look at exhuming their vaults more thoroughly for the upcoming 60th anniversary (which is actually the 60th anniversary of the BAA, but whatever)

That can't be right, Russell lost two playoff series, to the Hawks in 58 and the Sixers in 67.  So he obviously lost two "win or go home" games.  Did they mean Game 7s?

BTW RE: Dons' post - all 3 players had one "Pre Magic/Bird" guy on their lists.  It's not like they're ignoring those eras.
