i had a had time believing Orr just called him a piece of crap and thats it, but on this video you can clearly hear someone yell 'you piece of crap' right after Smart comes crashing in, and he gets up right afterward.

This isnt 100% proof, but it's pretty convincing that maybe that is all that Orr said, at least initially.  If thats the case, Smart is completely in the wrong here.

Yup. Because we all let people call us piece of crap all the time and just walk away.  Why don't they just drop this Orr guy off in the middle of a Cowboys sports bar, make sure everyone knows who he is and tell him "Hey. Whatever happens just walk away".

Orr is a piece of crap. Give Smart a medal and sportsmanship of the Year award.

I can't fault Smart for getting caught up in the heat of the moment a little and standing up for himself. Being a paying spectator doesn't give you the right to spout any kind of crap that you want at the players without repercussions.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

I'm exceptionally disappointed in Smart's coach for not standing up for his player. If I'm his coach I'm just not going to go coach in Texas Tech anymore or require my players to play there until Orr is removed from games going forward. Tough? Shoulda though of that. Orr is a piece of crap.

Dick Vitale is saying what Smart did is unacceptable. I wonder if his kids were ever called that.  You call my kid that and we have a serious problem.

If I'm Smart I'm just withdrawing from school and going into the NBDL with Hairston. If I'm gonna be called that I'm getting paid.

no in an average situation you dont get to call someone a piece of crap and walk away.  But in regards to stuff college or professional athletes get called at games 'piece of crap' doesnt even cause a tremor on the richter scale.  Heckling on the scale of calling someone a piece of crap will NEVER go away, it's part of the game, it's part of playing on the road.  Racial Slurs yes thats whole other level, but piece of crap???  he didnt even curse for christs sake.  Whats he gonna do when someone says something about his mother or his sister?  It's only gonna get worse when he gets to the NBA.  He better take the games in Philly off.

So I gotta cry or suspend a guy if a punk fan in Philly gets pushed? Big deal. Orr is a piece of crap and got caught.

I don't buy the piece of crap video/audio.

As for the rest greg, I think fan behavior is awful at all levels. I wish the leagues, universities, and NCAA would put a stop to it. Because they could easily if they enforced the rules on the back of every ticket. They choose not to.

I have to say I totally reject the argument "Spoooorrttss are diffferent. When it's sports people have a license to abuse you as we see fit and you have no rights" Nope.  Orr is still a piece of crap even though he just happened to be at a sports event.

If the fan got into race stuff, he deserved a shove (not from a player, however) or worse.

Uh - no. You don't return physical violence for words. Period.

The race card is constantly played, and is ridiculous. So if he had insulted the guy's mother it would or would not have been okay to "shove or worse"? Or if he had called Marcus "not so" Smart some other expletive that would have made shoving the guy okay?

Violence is never the answer. I do not want any player on the Celtics that thinks otherwise. It can be stressful out there, of course. But it shouldn't be extra stressful because a known, and volatile, player is out on the court.

Im not denying that Orr is a piece of crap or got what he deserves.  The problem is Smarts reaction to such a small verbal jab.  If all he did was push someone for calling him a piece of crap whats gonna happen when someone does say something about his mother??

if you tell Smart he was right and did nothing wrong hes never gonna learn to tune those people out.

Whether it's justified or not do you want us to spend a high draft pick on a guy that lets fans get to him and will push and shove spectators when they call him a piece of crap??  That could have been a 15 or 20 game suspension in the NBA.

Whether you like or not.  Sports are different.  It's not just for the fans either, for the players.  I can sit and talk about your mother or wife while youre shooting free throws, but if you punch me in the face, youre gone for 20 games.

Trash talk is part of the game and if youre gonna be a professional you need to learn to tolerate it from both players and fans.  Thats all that calling someone a piece of crap is, talking trash.

I don't think Smart is dumb enough to cost himself that much money.  I'm not picking an inferior player because the other players don't stick up for themselves and he does. I'd be more concerned if he has gang affiliations and whatnot. Aaron Hernandez never went after a fan either. M Smart just did what tons of people would do.

No matter what someone calls you, hitting is not allowed. Kindergarten? Anyone?

Frankly, I see a lot of reverse racism on this board, with people excusing Smart's behavior because he played the race card, when no matter what words someone uses, you have an obligation not to react physically.

You really think that's all that happened? Or, that's all Smart thought he heard? I think there are some pretty galling leaps of faith there.
