This incident should not hurt his draft stock. But if he is covering his ass by making up a discriminatory verbal incident....then ya. I hope that is not the case though. No matter what it won't be as bad as TEO's bad pr.

Smart shouldn't have acted...but I suspect something serious must have been said to him. Just because fans pay money to go to sports games doesn't mean they can say whatever they want to players without consequences (not necessarily the player attacking them, but being ejected/banned from the arena, etc.). If the allegations are correct (and the supposed fan Jeff Orr isn't new to this behavior, from media accounts), Smart can be criticized, but Orr absolutely should be punished.

I'd sure love to hear from the fans in the immediate vicinity as to what happened...what was said.
Yep, my feeling too.  The fan and Smart have different accounts of what was said.  Smart's claim of what the fan said seem dubious to me.  A guy who goes to games regularly (don't know if he's a season ticket holder) calls opposing players the N word in 2014?  I find that doubtful, but will await hearing what others close enough to hear the encounter have to say.

An old white Texas Tech fan slinging racial slurs? Yeah, that's super doubtful.
Yeah, it is, as a matter of fact.  This isn't 1958.  If he's calling people the N word, I expect he'd have been kicked out and banned from games.  And interracial violence (verbal or physical) certainly couldn't be considered a predominantly white thing (as you're implying).

Not to mention that Texas Tech has a black coach, and nine black players.  For this fan to be hurling racial epithets at an opposing player for being black would make him epically stupid and illogical.  He may well be, but I find Smart's accusation of being called the N-word highly dubious.  We'll find out soon enough.

I'm not even saying that it is the case with Orr, but it's not unlikely. It doesn't matter if every player on the Texas Tech team is black, because someone who would call Smart that word is already an idiot and illogical.

As for whether racism is a white/non-white thing, you're missing the point. A white person calling a black person the N-Word or telling him to go back to Africa is something that is wrong per se, regardless of how any other people interact with each other.

Kid should have marched to the bench, called over the officials and outed the fan.

NO acceptable excuse for attacking a fan. None. He should be hit with a heavy suspension, but hearing three games. Typical for the weak knees running the Big 12.

And anger management classes - which should be a clear message to Ainge to stay away.

I seen the tape.   He pushed a fan not the same as an attack.   It is not like he knocked him down or anything or spit on him like Scott Skiles.   I have seen a lot worse pushes.   It's nothing I condone, however, and it crossed the line.   Some here make it sound like he nut punched the guy or murdered him he did not.

I am pretty in accordance with CoachBo on this one.  That sounds about right. TP.  It's about as close to trying to fix or educate him and not simply punish him.

Smart is having a press conference within the hour, so hopefully we'll hear his end of the story....

In the tape it is exceptionally clear that something specific happens at that exact moment to set Smart off. It's clear there's way too much money in ticket sales to put "fans" like this one further away from the athletes. People pay very good money specifically BECAUSE the players can see them and hear them up close. At that point the risk is yours. If you think people are going to rush to your aid or give you money or punish athletes because you provoked them.....no way. Absolutely not. I am so tired of fans that think because Jackie Robinson was a perfect human being or something that this gives you license to say and do whatever you want during a game.  I don't need martyr athletes any more or players trying to win the Nobel Peace wannabe Prize.  I sat next to an exceptionally racist fan once and wanted to knock him out myself. GO SMART!

Why on Earth would you call a player that?  This flies in the face of the statement he didn't say anything vulgar. So not only is he a (blank), he's a liar too. Can't wait till he bumps into some OSU fans.

Indeed, which is what makes it so unlikely, that a guy who is a regular at their games would suddenly decide to spit out racial epithets.  You would have to be stupid in the extreme to do so.  In addition to being just plain wrong, unless one were a moron, he'd already know that livelihoods are lost and lives wrecked for such racial transgressions.

We'll see if that particular fan was indeed that stupid.  He has denied saying what Smart accused him of saying.

You don't really have much of a point.  You've merely said that:

Sure, that would be wrong, just as it would be wrong for a black person to use racial pejoratives directed at whites  Expressions of racism go well beyond mere name calling, and they are hardly the predominant province of whites, and yet you implied that a particular set of people were egregiously racist:

Maybe you could wait to see what happened before throwing a whole subset of people under the bus as a bunch of evil racists.

Yeah. Maybe Smart blew up for no reason or something.  I mean the guy has already admitted he said something wrong and his story has skipped around. We should probably wait to pass judgement here. Maybe he just tried to give him a pat on the back or something.  We should totally give this Orr guy (with a history of this stuff and people saying he said something racial) the benefit of the doubt. Heck. Punish the black 18 year old. Nothing possibly racist there.

This is the part where people accuse me of a straw man or some sort of fallacy for various reasons.
