If the report is true and that disgusting fan indeed said something derogatory, then I can't blame Marcus Smart.

Marcus Smart is a kid, and while what he did is somewhat inappropriate, we cant condemn him for acting like what a kid would do. Especially when he's being character assassinated.

He indeed needs to grow some thicker skin, but I do not blame Smart one bit.

Smart seemingly has maturity / anger issues.  Just a couple of weeks ago he let his temper get the best of him:

I guess his promise to keep his composure and not let it happen again rings a little hollow now.  Couple these two instances with his blatant flopping and complaints about officiating, and you wonder just how mature he is.  (Of course, maybe the last two just make him ahead of his age, and ready for the NBA.)

I don't think this will affect Smart's stock too much - NBA execs are very forgiving of young talent.

But I do expect the NCAA to crack down hard.  Can't set a soft precedent for a player leaving the court to attack a fan.

Despite how easy it would be to rip on Smart for lack of maturity considering these two recent events, all I'm hearing this morning from "analysts" and reporters is how NBA exec's and his coaches praise him unendlessly for his maturity and what a good leader he has been on his teams and usa basketball over the summer.

What do you expect from Texans?

Still, Smart needs to focus his aggressiveness on the game and not on idiots in the stands.

Yep, my feeling too.  The fan and Smart have different accounts of what was said.  Smart's claim of what the fan said seem dubious to me.  A guy who goes to games regularly (don't know if he's a season ticket holder) calls opposing players the N word in 2014?  I find that doubtful, but will await hearing what others close enough to hear the encounter have to say.

An old white Texas Tech fan slinging racial slurs? Yeah, that's super doubtful.

Yeah, it is, as a matter of fact.  This isn't 1958.  If he's calling people the N word, I expect he'd have been kicked out and banned from games.  And interracial violence (verbal or physical) certainly couldn't be considered a predominantly white thing (as you're implying).

Not to mention that Texas Tech has a black coach, and nine black players.  For this fan to be hurling racial epithets at an opposing player for being black would make him epically stupid and illogical.  He may well be, but I find Smart's accusation of being called the N-word highly dubious.  We'll find out soon enough.

According to the reports, the fan (man) told him to "Go back to Africa."

I, for one, am sick of fans who thinks just because they pay money to go see a game, they can say whatever they want.  I tried to put myself in his shoes but I probably would do more.  People's ignorance in this day an age outstands me.  I totally approve of Smart's move (no pun).

Me too. The fan was probably some d**head who thinks he can get whatever with saying whatever he wants.

Marcus Smart should've ripped his head off.

Exactly.

And don't forget, Smart is only human and as human beings it's in our nature to sometimes act in the heat of the moment.

If I were in Smart's shoes and some loser decided to offend me just because he "paid for a ticket", I would've smashed his face in.

Sorry for sounding angry, it's just stuff like this really bothers me.

It's up to the players to act professional, BUT it's also up to the fans not to act like horses ass*s either.

PS….I'd love to see the Celts draft Smart. He seems like a hell of a player.

Where does that information come from?  Just wondering.  Did his texts somehow leak to twitter?

And which reports would those be? I wish I understood why people feel the need to speculate as they do.

As others have said, I think the truth will come out eventually.
