So Phoenix calls you up and says "Hey Danny, I understand you're trying to lose games. I'll help. Jeff Green and Avery Bradley for Okafor and two protected 2nd rounders. Deal?"

New York calls you up and says "You know we love Rondo and we understand you're trying to lose. How about Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green for Amare and a protected 2018 first rounder? Deal?"

There's no need to act impatiently or rashly here.  If he finds a deal he likes, he'll take it.  Otherwise, I don't see a pressing need to make any moves just for the sake of it, certainly not for the sake of getting worse.
I disagree.  Your dream scenario (standing pat and making the playoffs with a below .500 record) represents what I see as the absolute worst-case scenario for this team.

O.k., then, I'll put you in the corner of being staunchly in favor of "rashness and impatience."
We've gone back and forth on this.  Fully healthy this team has a ceiling of 36 wins.  I just don't see the next step a 36 win team can take to jump into relevancy.  They wouldn't have cap space.  Their draft picks would be very unlikely to net stars... the picks wouldn't be valuable on the trade market.

Actually, now that I actually pause and give it thought, it's possible we could work out something next year involving Bass' expiring contract + some young assets and picks.   So really... you're probably right.  Whatever. Let it ride.  Let's dive into mediocrity.  Let's push Indiana to a 6 game series.

Excellent.  Glad to hear that you are in complete agreement.  It's settled, then.
It's settled.  You win.

This is fantastic.

Keep up the good work C18, you've just managed to save one tanker from their tankitis disease, let's try to save the rest.

Let no tanker go un-helped.

Please explain how feeling that missing out on a top 10 pick because the team stumbles into the playoffs with 36 wins is a "worst case scenario" demonstrates rashness and impatience.

I would not make it.  Cap Space is no use if people won't come here.  I defy anyone to name a good signing other than when we had a superstar here?  PP and KG drew people and Bird got us Walton probably but with no stars no signings!

I hope there are GM's with your value system so Ainge can fleece them.

I purposely made two lopsided trades to show that you don't trade players for poor value just to get worse.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Don't worry he will.
A few more games to build trade values and 2 or 3 will be gone. Maybe 4 if we are lucky.
Just keep Rondo and Sully and we're sweet...unless we are blown away by something for those two.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I think bass and Wallace should really be the only players were actively trying to move. Both solid role guys on contenders that hurt our team. Wallace with his contract and bass with his impeding in olynyks development. Everyone else will be moved on draft day.

Yeah, I agree with Pho.

If the Celtics made the playoffs below .500 I would absolutely cheer them on, but inside my soul would hurt a little bit.

I always assumed the cap space was for flexibility in future trades on draft day. If we don't get a top 3 pick I fully expect our pick to be traded in a nice package landing an impact player. Parker, embiid, wiggins after that it's just another piece to trade away or we will be stuck with another Jeff green caliber player.

I noticed your inability to name a free signing.  Thanks, you made my point.

I am glad Ainge is our GM and not you.   He built the last championship on trades not signings and cap space.   He let guys go when they wanted more than market value.   He knew the reality of Boston free agency.  Cap space is worth nothing is you can't attract free agents.

HINT guys usually don't sign up with unproven rookies.

Last time he got vetereans, I am not against this but he didn't have a big signing folks.  I think guys will be gone but I recall Ainge's modus operandi last time was asset collection not cap space.

I'll just say this about stars coming to Boston via free-agency, when where we actually in a position (having cap space) to acquire a star free-agent and we missed on it?

So I don't see it as much as no stars coming to Boston, but when has Boston actually been in a position to acquire such a player in the first place? I would bet not many.

I'm fairly certain the Celtics have never once had the requisite cap space to sign a "max" FA.  At least not in the modern CBA-era.  Hard to sign a player the rules prevent you from signing.

I suspect that if the Celtics were to find themselves with the cap space to do so, and still had Rondo and Sully on the roster, it's quite possible a star would want to come here.

People need to understand, the Celtics are the 4th most valuable NBA franchise, as valued by Forbes.  They're not LA, Miami or NY/BKN. but they are a highly respected franchise and the most successful.  Not everyone can play in the glamour cities, even those teams have to abide the salary cap rules.

Well first, I want to apologize. After re-reading my post it sounded pretty rude and that wasn't my intention.

The point I was trying to make in my lopsided trades was that (some) people want Ainge to trade players for essentially whatever he can get just so we can improve our draft position. I think it's simply a terrible idea.

I just directly addressed your trades because I tried to make a couple trades that were terrible value for Boston and you seemed to consider that New York one.

After yesterday's game - I want to keep Sully more, and Bradley a little less

Rondo/Sully is a must keep!
