I like him as a 10-15mpg backup big for $2-3 million a year.
But the Celtics already have two superior PFs on the books in Jared Sullinger (30-35mpg starter) and Brandon Bass (20-25mpg backup big) and a third young PF in Kelly Olynyk who needs playing time to develop. So no interest in keeping Humphries.
I am sure Humphries would have ended up demanding more money and playing time than I would be comfortable in giving him (10-15mpg, $2-3mil) anyway. So even without the PF options already on the team, I'd pass on keeping Hump.
Sorry to tell you this, but Humphries has been better than Sully this season. Yes I hear the pain in the hearts of all Celtics after reading this but it's true. Hump has been the ultimate model of consistency and on a per minute basis his production has been consistently excellent, while Sully ha been up and down like a yoyo. Hump has had a better slshot selection offensively, heknows his limitations and plays the game within his limits, while Sully is out there popping up threes at 28% at three per game. The ONLY reason if keep sully over hump right now is upside, because sully is young there's a good chance he'll get better, while Hump well likely be the same player in the future.
Sully is a nice player, but he's also joyously overrated by Boston fans. We talk about things like whether you would trade him for Kevin Love, etc., as if he is a Star. He's not. He's undersized, he's not very athletic, he is foul prone (ans fragrant prone) andhas yet to show any real consistency this season. Even Bradley and Greenhave been more consistent than Sullythis season.
Hump has been or most productive player, with Bradley probably a close second, followed by a two way tie between Green and Sully. Neither of those guys is a clear cut starter on a championship team, butBradley and Greenare the closest to it.
