I'm not crazy about the deal.  Since we signed Bayless, I don't think losing Crawford helps us tank.

If we end up with a first rounder, I'll like the deal but I wouldn't count on that.

Crawford's probably a better basketball player than Bayless.

Bayless definitely fits our team more, though.
I agree.

so is Anthony an expiring contract next season?

if so(and we don't waive him upon his arrival), wouldn't that give him some value come draft day?

i'm just not understanding the downside of Anthony. he seems like a guy that could help us this yr. and with his contract help us next yr. by being an expiring contract.

he is $3.8 million more next year then Brooks and Crawford combined.

but is it an expiring contract next yr.?

It's  player option next year, but  my guess is that he'll pick it up.

More importantly, we finally have that Perk-like presence inside that so many CB'ers have been pining for... and all it took was JCrawesome and MarShon Brooks.

RIP Steez.

that's what i'm saying. he'll no doubt help us this yr. and who knows about next but being an expiring contract next yr. gives us some flexibility on draft day.

i'm also still sticking to a thread I started a ways back:
http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=68607.0

that this feels like the '07 - '08 season. i'm thinking if we don't land a top 3 pick this yr. danny goes all in and makes moves to make us competitive next yr.

just dont like this trade... trading 2 expiring deals for a player the Celtics dont want and have to hope he doesnt excerise a 3.8mil option next year..

Then have to rely on the 76ers to make the plyoffs either this or next year..

Im not sure what will happen but if one of the 2 things happen it wont be a bad deal and if both happen its a great deal however its still a big risk when both would have just walked or trade Crawford for a super late 1st or 2nd heads up..

Why is Miami doing this though?  Isn't Anthony and a pick more useful than Tony Douglas to them?

Because Anthony has a player option for next year which he would probably exercise. That will add to the Heat's salary total and would mean that they would have to offer even less to their Big 3 (or other Free Agents). Good move for them.

This is how I feel.  Crawford and Brooks were expiring anyway.  Not sure if taking on Joel Anthony is worth 2 second rounders.

Probably the only way the Celtics had a chance to get a 1st rounders for these two.

It is a spin of the die to see if they can get one more 1st rounder for two guys they have no plans for after this season.

ohh I don't know. if the last game taught me anything, it's that the only difference between what bayless did and what Crawford's been doing lately is bayless was hitting his forced shots.

so I wouldn't worry too much.

Has any player ever received an NBA Player of the Week award and then been traded as quickly as Jordan Crawford?

I think for taking on Anthony's deal and also giving out Crawford the Celtics should have gotten more than just a "probably not" 1st rounder.

From Goodman at espnboston.com:
Quote
The trade will save the Heat about $7.7 million in salary and luxury taxes this season and frees them on the $3.8 million they owed Anthony for next season. Depending on the Heat's salary-situation for next season, this is a deal that could end up saving them more than $15 million in salary and luxury taxes for a player who played just 37 minutes this season.

Also, I thought the Celtics would at least try to make a run at some free agents this fall. Anthony's 3.8 million would seem to discourage that, unless they have some more deals to unload contracts (Bass, Green) planned. I guess this also increases the odds Bradley stays, doesn't it?

If the 76ers are in the lottery this and next season, then those two second-rounders have a shot at being those early second round picks that some people consider almost as good as a late first because of the lack of guaranteed money.  The Celtics would be in a good spot to gamble on a foreign player who would be a sure first-round pick if he were guaranteed to come to the US but has a thorny buy-out situation with his foreign club.

If Anthony invokes his player option, the Celtics have a nice package of the expiring contracts of Bass/Anthony and the unguaranteed contract of Bogans to package with draft picks should any big-contract guy become available.  It's not as big of an impediment to doing a deal clearing cap space as Courtney Lee's deal would have been.

Yes, you don't have to give 1st round guarantees but you also may have an expensive renegotiation in 1-2 years if you happen to hit on a player in the 2nd round (depending on how many years you settled on). 1st rounders are still the most beneficially unfair contracts to be wielded by GMs against players.

The Celtics are projected to be under the cap. Meaning they could sign somebody to a one-year "expiring" if they desired.

Anyway it's not a horrible deal, just a tiny letdown considering Crawford was playing so well earlier this year. I'm surprised everyone is so positive considering 2nd rounders are relatively easy to acquire. I think it's a sign that deep down, Celtics fans realize Crawford's strong play was kind of a mirage and he never had much value to begin with.

So Ainge traded Barbosa and Collins (now out of the league) to get Crawford.  And then Crawford + Brooks (a throw in, bench guy) for a potential 1st rounder.

Danny is slick.

GRADE:  A
i think joel anthony doesn't even matter to ainge, except that he can be used in another trade
he just moved brooks (out of nba soon) and crawford for POTENTIAL draft !

Look at it this way, the guard rotation a couple weeks ago was Crawford-Bradley-Lee-Pressey-Brooks and now its Rondo-Bradley-Bayless-Pressey-Bogans. That's a fairly significant upgrade I would say.
