I think the only value of the trade is the first round pick.  Lee has negative value due to his contract.  Bass is serviceable but not a starter on a good team.  He is still undersized and a poor rebounder.  And I wouldn't call him a stretch 4.

Just a ridiculous offer if I were Houston.  I would laugh da off the phone frankly.
Asik isn't a starter on a good team either (as in currently for Houston).  If Houston wants to laugh off this offer than they better get used to having Asik sitting on their bench and pouting.  Bass and Lee would be more valuable to Houston this year than Asik will be or so it seems based on what Asik has done for Houston as compared to what Bass and Lee have done for Boston.
Asik is behind arguably the best center in the league.  That's not exactly the same as not being good enough to start on a good team.  And if I'm Houston, I just as soon let Asik rot on the bench than trade him for the rumored trade.  I'm thinking that is the better option for them.

If Houston traded Asik for bass and lee, they would be laughed out of the nba.

Pau Gasol was traded for less.  And Asik is no Gasol.  the reason the Rockets need to dump him is that they have Dwight Howard now and Asik isn't happy warming the bench when just the year before he was putting up career highs.

If nobody else tops the Celtics offer I can definitely live with giving up Bass, Lee, and a protected 1st for our new center. :)

As it turned out, mark gasol was far from nothing.

Why would the Hawks trade Millsap? Why would they need two starting centers with Horford and Asik???

horford isn't a real center, like sully. He has been playing out of position his whole career .

I wouldn't trade Sully for Asik

It would be just as stupid to trade a  point / rebound machine like Milsap  for as well

Atlanta would not do that the way Milsap has been playing.

At this point they almost have to trade for something they already said no to. After tomorrow whatever they get won't have any future trade viability.

Dwindling options.
I think if they saw any value in trade options, a deal would have been done.  As it were, the rumored package is close to zero trade value in my book.  As difficult as it may be, the rockets are not making that trade.  They would be foolish.

Then they'll likely have to accept swallowing Asik, not getting a stretch PF they need and deal with angry Asik. Lee wouldn't be too bad a fit for them either. Completely disagree with the zero value sentiment. Adding any pick at this point is gravy.

What's the rest of the nba going to say if he's still on the roster next year, making $15M sitting on the bench and complaining about his role?

For what it is worth:

10:01pm: Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe hears the Celtics and Rockets are “close” to a deal and echoes much of what we heard tonight before Bulpett reported that the talks are no longer active. It appears the teams are sending out conflicting information on the talks, perhaps in an exercise of negotiating tactics, though that’s just my speculation.

Of course not, Sully is already better than Asik. Sullinger is taking a big step forward in my eyes, where before I thought he would max out as David West, to see him already putting up 20-10 reguarly I'd say he can be better than west.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
i just joined this thread and news a few minutes ago. but if ainge can get asik for bass and lee and a #1 he is brilliant.

bass and lee had no real future here, but ate up a big chunk of salary space. i was hoping ainge could move them, but did not imagine he could get asik.

i like asik, but not his salary. plus with only one year left ainge will be making some tough choices on resigning him. but i am sure he knows all this and more.

but then again, this celtics tean is desperate for a defensive center who can score a little bit...that is asik.

asik, sully, and green make a pretty good front line.

and best of all??? the celtics would still have a ton of picks left in the future. in danny i trust.

As usual, hwang is spot on. TP
Shedding Courtney Lee's deal and its extra year whilst gaining a player who is a VERY rich man's Kendrick Perkins is just phenomenal.

Giving up a pick that is not our own 2014 first rounder is fine, because by making this deal we are probably going to lose a few more games thus improving our own pick. If someone said to you we can shed Lee and Bass' deals whilst picking up one of the best rebounding big men in the NBA who is 7 feet & has good hands if we throw in a 2015 or 16 pick then you MUST pull the trigger.
Getting the deal done by tomorrow means we can still move Asik this season.

Back to the trade, Lee was excellent from 3 pt land and Bass was one od the best help defenders in the league, who also gave us so much stretch with his jumpshooting.

To top this off, Sully now slides to the PF spot (his natural position), whilst Olynyk gets loads of playing time backing up both Asik and Sully.

We improve our rebounding immediately and in the long run, whilst presumably losing a few games without Lee and Bass's offense.
Humphries will lighten that burden but I think they'll give most duties to Olynyk and splash time between Hump and Fav for center back up duties.

Moving Lee and Bass clears 12 million whilst Asik brings back 8 million.
He's owed $15 million in 2015 but only 8 million counts against the cap.
I am now wondering if Danny wants this deal done by December 19th so he can showcase Asik for a potential move on draft night and/or if Asik is the first of multiple additions to make us a contender for 2015.
The Celtics would rather pay Asik off the cap and preserve that $7 million cap space for a real all star player at SF or SG.
My hunch is that Carmelo is the next target come draft night-maybe earlier if things get really bad.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

As crazy as it may sound, I think the league would think better of Houston if they kept Asik on the bench than if they traded him for bass and lee.

I'm not sure if this asik thing will happen, but I'm very excited to announce that I just traded Lance Stephensen (16.4), Zack Randolph (17.7) and David West (16.7) for Kevin Love (29.3) in my head-to-head points league.  A top 3 fantasy player!  This is a big moment for the 2013-14 New England Leprechauns.  He joins Paul George, newly returned Kobe Bryant and soon to be returning Rajon Rondo as the core of the future champions of the "NBA Rocks" ESPN Fantasy Basketball league.

  Right now Sully's per36 is 19/10 with a TS% of .542. West's best year numbers-wise was probably 2008, with a per36 of 20/9 and a TS% of .535. It's easy t imagine Sully putting up better numbers than West ever did.

Re: Sully

If you've only just realized we're not moving Sully, come on!!!  ;D

Re: Asik

It's like the Clippers KG-PP deal. Ainge can wait. We have all the chips plus more. We don't NEED to make a move.

The Rockets cannot.

Keep driving that hard bargain, Ainge!
