Based on what we've seen so far, this team will get crushed consistently by above average teams, and have a chance to win against below average teams. That's not so surprising, given what's on the roster. Stevens has done a good job.
Rondo will return eventually, but I expect Danny to sell off at least a couple of these veterans (Bass being the most likely, followed by Crawford), which will offset whatever Rondo, still working his way back to 100%, adds to the mix.
To start this season I thought this was a 20 win team. Stevens has been even better than I expected, and a few guys have definitely outperformed expectations -- Sullinger, Bass, Crawford, and Faverani especially. As a result, this is looking more like a 25-30 win team.
So you're right; if the plan really is to get a top 5 pick, Danny will probably have to make some drastic moves to really sink this ship. In another year, this roster might have been bad enough to be bottom 5, but there are a LOT of bad teams this year, and a few teams that are simply abominable.
Still, even if the Celtics just end up with a pick towards the latter half of the top 10, that's not so bad. It means that the talent on hand is a bit better than expected. There may still be a guy Danny can find at that point in the draft who may become a star, though probably not a superstar.
