A 6' 9" shooting guard? No big deal.

Corey Brewer is a 6'9 guard. Of course, Magic Johnson was too.

I saw it in the preseason last season against Philly and was very excited to see Pierce + Green. The size we had at the wings was literally awesome (as in had me in awe). Then Doc completely ditched the idea and went small ball.

And what does this say about our 48 shooting guards? lol

Makes sense. We only have 5 other guys at that position.

why?! He is athletic enough to keep up with shooting guards and big enough to take advantage of size over most of them.

Because you have Gerald Wallace at SF alongside Jeff Green instead of Pierce and G-Wallace has nowhere near the offensive skill-level of Pierce. His inability to create proper floor spacing dooms that lineup.

You have two bigs on the floor who have jump-shots (Sully, Bass, Olynyk. A limited jump-shooting SF in Wallace. J.Green at SG. Then either Rondo, Bradley or Pressey at PG who all have limited jump-shots relative to their position too. That means defenses can collapse all over J.Green when he gets deep catches. And J.Green he gets touches far away from the basket, he is attacking a defender who is quicker than he is and better able to stay in front of him. And if it is Rondo, you have to take the ball out of his hands to run post-ups for J.Green and G.Wallace inside which lowers the value of Rondo's playmaking.

All it is going to do is kill ball + player movement (by forcing post ups and creating stagnant movements) and result in the team taking a much larger number of long range two point jump shots ... the least efficient shot in basketball.

This Boston team doesn't have the personnel to make J.Green at SG an effective option.

They are too short on offensive firepower.

It'll really get interesting when he decides to slot Olynyk in as Rondo's replacement at the point.  ;)

wow, he's the anti-small ball coach, the opposite of Doc!

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
So Crash can start and play at 3?

Why not just put Crash at SG, despite the lack of shooting (he did shot good in the Playoffs) instead.

That's still a lot of size and a good enough speed to go against other 2's.
2019 CStrong Historical Draft 2000s OKC Thunder.
PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

Our very big lineup would then be:

PG - Olynyk (i know he is a 7 footer, but he was a PG before);
SG - Jeff Green;
SF - GWallace;
PF - Sullinger;
C - Veetor Fav;

Floor spacing would not be an issue since KO and Green both have decent shooting skills and we will also have the size advantage versus the other team; The only caveat is that we may be giving up a speed advantage;
Peavey Bass Player - relearning to play after 10 years sucks;

This is where positional designations get silly.  The Celtics can refer to Wallace as the shooting guard instead of Green all they want but the opposition doesn't have to abide by it.  Whether Wallace is the shooting guard or not, if they play together, I would think the opponent's best defender will guard Green.

I hate the notion that shooting guards are always quicker than small forwards.  It's a concept that will never die.

Let's go by their schedule:

Toronto (Derozan) He's athletic and quick but a mismatch for Green defensively? I don't think so.

Milwaukee (Mayo) Mayo's not all that quick.  He's only mid-tempo.  I think Green is faster.

Memphis (Tony Allen) Allen's a defensive role player.  He's not going to kill you offensively.

Utah (Alec Burks) He's quick but not too much to handle for Green.

Anyway, the point is, if player has the athleticism to be a good small forward, they have the athleticism to guard shooting guards.

In other words, the same thing that's been happening for the last 2 seasons.  This is not new news.

It continues to amaze me that people considered Pierce the SG when Jeff Green has 10 times the speed, and Pierce hardly ever guarded opposing 2s in those lineups.  Doc clearly didn't think Green could check SGs with any type of regularity (as Stevens will find out) but he certainly trusted him with it a lot more than the 34 year old Pierce.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

LOVE this idea. It's funny, the other day when I was watching part of the Media Day coverage, I thought to myself "now that the Celtics have two starting caliber wing players in Green and Wallace, why not start both of them?"

Especially during Rondo's absence, I think Green and Wallace could give other teams a lot of match up problems and maybe even (God forbid) win quite a few games too :D

Besides, say what you will about Wallace, but the guy should be starting and I think if you have him ride the bench, then he REALLY won't want to be here.

AND...even though we have many other shooting guards, most of them aren't that great (see Jordan Crawford/Courtney Lee) and would still rather have Green/Wallace starting simultaneously.
