Does Doc have a short memory or something - remember that Perk was injured and barely played after the trade.

And what's up with Doc always talking about the past and the C's?  Doesn't he have a new job?  One that he wanted?????????

Rivers acknowledged that the 2011 Kendrick Perkins-Jeff Green trade was a mistake that ultimately hurt Garnett.

“I think so,” reflected Rivers, “because we needed the toughness. The one thing we did by losing Perk was we removed Kevin’s protector. I didn’t think it was a coincidence that, after Perk left, that Kevin got into all those little flicks with the other teams. Perk deflected all that.”

This may have been mentioned before, but is the above true?  About KG getting into more scrapes post-trade?

The Quentin Richardson stuff was when Perk was still here, right?

(I'm still not a fan of the trade.  I'm just not sure that it had a lot to do with KG getting into it with other teams.  KG did that in Minnesota, and he did that since he came to Boston.)

of course it is not true.  That is just Doc Rivers.  Blame others to make yourself look better and make up whatever you want to support it.  And since he schmoozes the media as well as anyone they never call him on that sort of stuff and just take it like it is the truth.

The Perk trade WAS a mistake (everyone knows it)
Oh really? I don't consider it a mistake, and I'm part of "everyone", so I think there's a problem with your data set.

Let me rephrase.

After the Perk trade, the Celts were left with no legit center. Shaq was injured, Jermaine O'Neal did return afterwards but does not have Perk's toughness and Krstic never really seem to find his niche on the team.

Before the Perk trade, the Celts had ZERO HEALTHY CENTERS!   None.  Nada.  Zero.

Perk, Shaq, Jermaine, Semih - ALL were injured.

They also had no backup SF.

After the trade they had a starting caliber center (Krstic) and a backup SF (Green).

Perk was never very healthy or effective the rest of that season.   Go back and look at how many actual minutes he played down the stretch.  He was a shell.

Keeping Perk in no way or form would have been any sort of guarantee that we would have won anything, let alone Banner 18.

Together, Jermaine and Krstic actually gave us more value and production at the center position in the playoffs than Perk gave OKC.

Not having a healthy Shaq and Rondo getting his arm bent backward were far more critical factors than the Perk trade as to why we didn't win that season.

It really WAS amazing how easy that team made it look with Shaq on the floor cleaning everything up.  He had really great hands.  Nobody talks about that.  Great hands, that guy.

Yeah, that was probably my favorite starting 5 for the Celtics during the KG era;
Rondo
Ray
Pierce
KG
Shaq.

That first (?) game when they just stomped all over the Heat, with the celebration party still fresh news...

Glorious. I wish that game was on youtube.

sign me up! I LOVED that team...I loved it so much, I made that team on NBA 2k, with stats they had during their prime, simulated the season

my god the results were awesome  :'(

I think of those hands inside, on the weak side catching passes and finishing for easy points.  Shaq never had it so easy.

When I was pulling for a return of Big Al, it was the hands on a good finisher that I was wanting more than the go-to strong side post moves.

I was at that game ;D

Anyway, I agree.

I loved the KG/Ray/Rondo/Paul/Shaq lineup. It's almost as though the five of them were meant for each other.

Again, imagine how far they could've gone if Shaq stayed healthy :'(

You put that healthy starting five vs Miami, and the "Heatles" don't stand a chance.

Finally a statement on the Perk trade that is true and makes sense. We keep Perk that year and we are in the finals no questions asked. I love Green and am a huge Green supporter, but that Perk deal had all the effects on KG that Doc talked about and then some.

KG was fine all early season without Perk that year.

Rondo's arm gets hurt, having Perk on the roster won't matter.

Losing Perk in game 7 of the finals lost a championship.

Refs call that 4th quarter straight, we win the chip with the fat, lazy, out of shape, Rasheed Wallace as our Game 7 starting center.

if Artest didn't outshoot Ray from the 3pt line in the 2nd half, we would have also won the chip

Is anyone surprised that Doc thinks that the Perk trade was a mistake?  He believed in the synergy of the starting five that won the title. Doc understands that Perk doing the dirty work like bodying opposing bigs had value, especially to KG, whose body wasn't suited for it. If one or both of the O'Neals could have been  healthy, it would have been a different story.

Those were Doc's guys, and he had a tremendous amount of success with them.  He wanted to take another shot with them, and the trade precluded him from doing so.

Calling Doc ridiculous for having this opinion is ridiculous.  This is the captain of the ship.  He knows how best to maneuver the ship.  It doesn't fit the narrative on those who liked the Perk trade, but this is how the coach of the team felt about the trade.  I put a lot of weight in it.  (Of course, it backs up my view of the trade,  conveniently).

Who are you taking with our Big 4, a healthy Shaq or a healthy Perk?

Be honest.

Not having a healthy Shaq and Rondo getting his arm bent backward were far more critical factors than the Perk trade as to why we didn't win that season.

That trade we received a healthy Starting Center, a backup SF and a 1st round pick.

In one trade, Danny solved a number of our team's deficiencies and netted a future asset which Danny blew on Fab Melo.

We owned that trade as far as the parts, I do agree that the spirit of the team was shaken and we probably never recovered 100% as a team which was still good enough for us to sweep the Knicks in the 1st round.

With Rondo hurt in the Heat series and both James and Wade draining 3's and outside jumpers, there was no question we lost in 5 games.

People often forget that Chris Bosh basically outplayed KG in that series, which CANNOT happen...sorry.

Check out KG's numbers in our losses that series, pretty disturbing.

Case in point, we had a shot to even that series 2-2 in pivotal Game 4, KG came up short (1-10 with 7 points / 10 rebounds) vs Bosh (8-17, 20/12).

Media likes to hype up a good story so when Rondo got hurt in Game 3 and then returned to spark us...that was the news that got broadcasted. People forget KG nearly had 30/20 in that Game 3 and Pierce netted 27 points. That is why we won that Game 3 by 16 points.

Again, KG came up short in Game 4 while Pierce duplicated his 27 points production....we lost by 8.

I know it isn't realistic to expect KG and Pierce to either drop 30 or go 30/20 every game in the playoffs but that's what needed to happen in order for us to beat Miami with Rondo playing with one healthy upper extremity.

If Rasheed Wallace wasn't fat, lazy, and out of shape all season, that Game 7 would have been in Boston.

Except there wouldn't have been a Game 7.

This is just not true.  We stunk in the regular season, and Rasheed Wallace would not have lead us to a better record than the Lakers.

Yes. Thanks, Doc. The Perkins trade was a mistake.
