MKG can get a lot better, but he doesn't seem like a smart bet to make a big leap forward next year. I've been wrong before though.
I think his defense will take another step forward from good to well above average. His offense I am thinking will take quite a bit longer.

TRADE

Phoenix sends: Jimmy Butler, 12.17, 13.9

Philadelphia sends: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, 8.9, 8.10

That seems incredibly unrepentantly lopsided to me. Jimmy Butler was a difference maker last season for the Bulls, MKG was a net negative. Sessions is okay, Birdman is okay, but its a homerun for Philly in my mind.

A "net negative" might be overstating things a bit.  9 points, 6 rebounds, 46% FG% and a rookie of the month award for a struggling rookie isn't a "net negative", especially when the player in question is 19 years old.

I'm saying the SF with the broken (29.4%) jumpshot, that allows more points than he scores, and isn't particularly good at defending isn't a guy I'd accept back as a headliner for a guy who consistently outperformed starters at 2 different positions in his first season as a rotation player.

MKG can get a lot better, but he doesn't seem like a smart bet to make a big leap forward next year. I've been wrong before though.

Under that criteria, was Jimmy Butler a good bet to make the leap his second year?

2.6 points, .182 3PT%, 31.9% overall on jumpers.  He gave up nearly twice as many points as he scored as a SF, and as a SG he was outscored, as well.

If I had to bet on one player who will disappoint this year between Jimmy Butler and MKG, I would bet on Butler.  MKG has a ton of physical tools and is an extremely hard worker; he's going to be a very good player.

Thanks Roy. I know MKG is far from perfect but for what we sent out for him I saw value. I've liked the kid since college, something about his play style just fun to watch.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

I have no idea how to manage my expectations for Kidd-Gilchrist, I was underwhelmed by his play and his shooting stroke gives me pause. Then again he still managed to shoot nearly 47% and the list of 19 year olds who averaged 9+ points, 5+ rebounds and 1+ assist per game is short and impressive:

James, Garnett, Anthony, McGrady, Bosh, Smith, Deng, Cliff Robinson, and the lone bust Darius Miles.

Of course, Kidd-Gilchrist's #s place him on the very bottom rung of that list. Still it gave me pause.

Actually, I bet on Jimmy Butler to make it last season. I did, Roy. I called it. Me. This guy.

Me.

Regarding MKG, its one thing to say, "this rookie is going to succeed next season", but its a tougher thing to look at a unequivocally big minutes, bad rookie campaign and expect what amounts to drastic leaps forward in a second year, especially for perimeter players.

It can happen. I just don't think it happens often, and MKG's jumpshot..just terrible.

Jared Sullinger

Ha.  I had literally said to myself "I wonder where Sully will go" 5 seconds before I this pick.

Overdue. Talked myself out of drafting him and already regret it. Given that rookies and journeymen power forwards have ruled the day, Sullinger could easily prove to be the top pick of the round.

You clearly had a lot of confidence in him, drafting him (or having Yoki draft him, or however that worked) with the 20th pick of the 13th round.

Nice one. Very good fit too playing behind CP3 in a pick and roll heavy offense.

The way it worked, Roy, is that I saw promise in the kid because Deng had impending wrist surgery (which never materialized), Rose was hurt, and the coaches in Chicago were going nuts about the kid, so I knew he'd get major playing time. So I picked him up because I'm a genius.

Well, if MKG only maintains his play over 36 minutes a game next season he'll average:

12.5 points on 45.8% shooting, with a 74.9 FT%, , 8.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.0 steal, 1.2 blocks, and just 1.8 TOs.

Everyone is raving about Jimmy Butler, but durability and defense aside, his production is hardly jaw dropping. Here are his per 36 #s

11.9 points on 46.7% shooting, with a 80.3 FT%, 5.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.5 blocks, and just 0.8 TOs.

Jimmy drills the three ball but he's also three years older, and had the benefit of playing under the best defensive mind in the NBA, and on a top-5 team.

Throw Andersen and Sessions into the deal and I can talk myself into the return.
