  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
So Carmelo has an early termination option in 2014. He's gotta be pretty bummed with the Knicks. And recently the rumor was he asked New York to get Rondo to the Big Apple.
He likes Rondo and wants to play with him.

Biggest questions:

1)would Melo come to Boston and leave New York or would he just wait till Rondo's contract is up and go hard with the recruitment like Harden/Parsons did for Dwight Howard?

2)Would Danny Ainge consider this? It's just an idea, and I'll again say that I'm a pro tanker. It seems that Melo is the only free agent that seems wildly plausible as a possibility because of the Rondo connection.

Would you be okay with Melo coming here?
*Leading scorer in the NBA last season.
*Just turned 29 and heading into his prime.

It would probably mean moving at least Jeff Green or if not him then Bradley+Sully +2 first rounders in a sign and trade. He could also just walk and we'd sign him with our monstrous cap space.
Danny could be interested in a move like this for such assets and I suppose it's why he collects them up.

As a random example lets say Melo does agree to come here for Sully+Bradley+picks or Olynyk+Bradley+picks.

We then trade Jeff Green for a shooting guard like OJ Mayo on the Bucks assuming Mayo has improved and further solidified himself as a top 5 shooting guard in the NBA.

Either Sully or Olynyk is still here (the better of the two) and we round out the roster with a defensive big man in the vein of Chandler or some kind of strong paint presence/rebounder like Marcin Gortat.

Rondo
Mayo
Carmelo
Sully
Gortat

Is Melo a franchise guy? Hard to tell because his defense has never reached its potential and he doesn't seem to have the walk to back up his talk (weight is always terrible, never works on defense enough in offseason).
You could also say he's never had the right cast around him and perhaps a fresh start in Boston where we have cap room and flexibility with an All Star point guard could appeal to him?
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Nope -- Melo won't come to Boston.

Not as currently constituted anyway. If the C's could get another star talent, a top quality big man, maybe that could change. But not as things currently stand.

I think the Celtics would have to make the playoffs (or come really close) for him to consider it.  And it's possible they could.

It's a very good question.

Chances are, probably not.

I've got to think either resigning in New York or going to play with the Lakers next year would be more appealing to him than coming to Boston.

Remember, the Lakers will likely still have Kobe. Even though he's not getting younger, I am sure players would still love to play with him (except maybe Dwight.)

I think the ONLY way Melo to Boston could be swung is if the Knicks get wind that Melo won't stick around, and the Celts offer the Knicks a package centered around Jeff Green
(like you mentioned.)

Then Melo gets dealt here from New York and then maybe he likes being in Boston and would want to stick around with Rondo.

Would love to see it happen. I think Rondo and Melo would be a very good 1-2 punch.

The other way that Danny could also possibly influence this is if the Celts deal for Amare's contract, as has been speculated on this blog.

If the Celts land Amar'e in a deal and he likes it here, would that convince his friend to want  to come play here too?

Btw, Humphries for Amar'e checks out on nba real gm trade checker.

I think it's possible, but we'd need to have a better team. Rondo, Green, Melo is a good core, and Miami won't be as good as they are now with a declining Wade.

  • Let's Go Celtics!
I would love Melo, but I don't think Boston has a chance. I think it's LA or NY for him.

SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan

I don't see him leaving New York for the Lakers or for the Celtics.

I think being the centerpiece of a Knicks team is very, very important to him.

Personally, if he did come to Boston next season, I would rather we kept Green and Melo played the 4. Toss in even a mid caliber banger at the 5 and that is a seriously painful front court to guard against. Don't see how it happens though.

I'd really enjoy that, actually. I know many here don't care much for 'Melo, but I've been a fan of his since he was at Syracuse.

What if it becomes clear that the Knicks won't get past the second round anytime soon due to their roster/cap situation and the Lakers acquire other players (Kevin Love?) that leave no room for Melo?

I'm going to go ahead and say that the Celtics are more likely to win a title than the Knicks in the next five seasons.

Yes, very probable answer... I have no doubts about that. You think that this Cs team without Pp and Kg can b better than NYK.  You might even think that this team with Faverani and Kardashian can beat HEAT

I would agree. Have you seen some of the pick ups the Knicks have been making?

Metta, Bargnani, resigning an injured JR Smith. Good luck with that.

Suddenly, the Celts roster doesn't seem so bad.

I don't like Melo's game but I think Rondo would provide some unique things that would mask some of Melo's issues.

Rondo has championship experience and is someone else who could rise to the occasion in big games, which would take pressure off Melo.

Rondo would be a great complement to Melo in terms of getting him easier buckets.

And I think Rondo is strong-willed enough to bark at Melo when he gets into one of his "I'm going to launch a bunch of ill-advised contested jumpers with 22 seconds on the shot clock" phases. (I think this is the big thing keeping Melo from being a true franchise guy now).

I'm not sure Melo would appreciate any of the above things though.

So, I guess the answer is "probably not."
