How do you know Ainge wants to trade Rondo? He clearly said that he doesn't, and Brad Stevens seems thrilled to have him. Yours is pure speculation

to give some perspective, I posted the same topic in on the realgm boards in general trades and the Pistons fan section.

Take a look at what most fans had to say about trading Rondo for Drummond. They said that it would NEVER happen and that it was crazy to think that one of the involved general managers would give up that player for the other.
Who was the consensus winner?
Andre Drummond. In no way would the Pistons give up Drummond for Rondo. Answers that idea with a slap in the face.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.

It isn't just Pistons fans, though. The rest of the NBA, when it comes down to it, value Drummond more than Rondo (for the most part).

Maybe they do and maybe they don't, but are you saying you have links to quotes where members of nba front offices say that they value Drummond more than Rondo?

What if Detroit didn't offer Drummond or Monroe, but was willing to offer every other attractive player on their roster PLUS take our crap contracts along with Rondo?

What about something like a mega deal where
Det gets : Rondo, Lee, Crawford, Fab, Bass
Boston gets: Charlie V, Stuckey, Brandon Knight, Caldwell Pope and Jerebko.

We get some decent young players, expiring contracts, cap relief and set ourselves up for major cap space in 2014 and 2015. Would you do this? Would Danny?  This might be the only deal to be made with Detroit because as others have mentioned, I don't see Dumars giving up Monroe or Drummond.

No because you cant sell that to fans. People dont see "clearing cap space" as a valid reason to trade the star of the team. Of we got Drommond back and a pick or something then I think it would be taken better.

Cap space only does so much if the team is terrible and stars aren't willing to go there.  The one thing Rondo is, is a guy who can attract other players because he doesn't have to score, he is OK with other people doing the scoring.

You put way too much into Rondos true trade value after ACL surgery.

Although not explicitly stated, I like the OP's thought process: The best way to maximize the value of the Rondo asset is not to keep him (win too many games in 2013/2014), not to trade him for an asset of similar "today" value (same problem), but to trade him for a "rising value" asset - one who's ability to impact games is less than Rondo today but hopefully is equal, or greater, later. The suggested Detroit trade would fit this objective perfectly.

The question is would Detroit find suitable value in the transaction?

And thank you for the interesting read.

I don't know Rondo's trade value, just like you don't and neither do those goofballs on realgm. I just don't pretend to. I'm frankly just as happy if he has a low trade value and we end up keeping him since we're at least as likely to win a title with him as we are with about 90% of the returned value in trade proposals.
