Compete for what though!?! A championship! ?!? No not this year. If you think the lineup of Rondo, Bradley, Green, Olynyk and Bass is gonna bring a ring then you haven't seen the Miami Heat, Pacers and Knicks play, they have a superstar. Our lineup is young and is full of POTENTIAL. RR is a perennial all star but his game doesn't translate to taking over and winning games on his own. His game is to make OTHERS better and with what we have to offer rightnow isn't championship worthy.

Rondo's taken over and won plenty of games, especially in the playoffs.

I really don't understand how much Rondo is being underrated around here. And you know how much I've criticized Rondo, and still do, and how much blame I put on him when we as a team underperform.

But it's like people haven't noticed how Rondo has played during the playoffs, particularly the last time he was there, he was quite spectacular through much of it.

MVP-like spectacular.

Are we still really debating whether or not this team would be better with Pierce and KG???

Let it go. It was time to move on.

And by the way, I think we can still contend even though we dealt the old guys.

However, for some reason, a lot of people don't want to see any gray area between unloading the old guys and being a bad team.

Even though I may be the only one to think so, I say we can still be contenders, THIS YEAR.  We just needed to get younger and more athletic, that's all.

Not to mention we now have many more draft picks.

So, try to follow me here...there's 3 options.
Not one or two, but 3 options. I go for option 3.

1.)Unload Pierce and KG, now we suck

2.)Keep Pierce and KG and now we somehow still have a shot at banner 18

3.)Unload Pierce/KG and still contend...ding, ding, ding!!

OK i'll bite, how would we achieve that 3d option ?
Not being sarcastic, genuinely intrigued if a bit sceptical.

Haha. Just add talent around the guys we already have. Trades, free agent signings and building through the draft. We don't really have to get bad before we get good again, do we?

Trust me, I think most people on this site love Rondo. Earlier today in another thread, I mentioned how I would deal Rondo to the Knicks for Felton/Shumpert in the "Melo wants Rondo thread" and got RIPPED.

If we are lucky we might contend in five years.

I think that that would be a wildly successful rebuild.  I don't expect us to truly contend in the foreseeable future.

I would expect many on this board to be Negative Nancy's, but you Roy???  Come on buddy!!  You are KILLING me here!!:-))

Smitty77

Just my opinion.  It's really, really hard to truly contend in the NBA.  I don't have a lot of faith that we'll be in the top four to six teams in the next five years.

I have MUCH more FAITH in Danny than you Roy:-))  We will definitely be in the top five in less than five.  Mark it down:-)))

I would rather go to bed at night dreaming about Wiggins Parker or Randle than having nightmares about being down 3-0 and losing to the NYK in the first round again.

Since we clearly fielded a full roster in that series.
we were going to lose to the knicks regardless. having rondo would have brought it to 6 or 7 games. kg was playing on cortisone shots

We would have made it back to the ECF with a healthy Rondo.

I think we would've lost to Indiana in 6 games anyway, even if we got past New York Knicks. Even with a healthy Rondo, I don't see Pierce and Garnett hanging on much longer. They'd have been worn out. David West and Roy Hibbert would've abused whoever was in our frontcourt. Paul George would have wasted the 35 year old small-forward...  :(

We matched-up quite well with Indiana, this "abuse" you're talking about is completely baseless.

As is your contention that we would've gotten to the ECF with rondo. Fact is, most of the things said on message boards (especially those centered around sports) are baseless. For the most part we debate our opinions and interpretations of news and statistics we get elsewhere. This is not to say those debates or opinions don't have merit but we have to be aware we're not holding scientific studies here. Baseless, quite frankly, doesn't hold much meaning in this context.

There is not a chance in heck that Indy would EVER have swept us IF we had a healthy Rondo and Sully!!!!!

I'm not a tank person. But we had 0% chance with the team we had last season. And as a Celtics fan it's all of nothing. If we can't win it all then it's not working.  It will probably be a very long time before we've got another chance but the team had to roll the dice sometime.

I'd rather watch bad players try hard and fail then old guys wait to "turn it on"  in the playoffs and fail like the  last few years.
Peace through Tyranny

Some people are talking for 5 years at least to be contender or something like that. But un 5 years Rondo is gona be 33 years old. So yo rebuld step by step in 5 years( maybe more tha that) with this kind of prospective does not have a sense.

Rebuilding sucks. I hope all you rebuild fanatics are happy now.

If we are lucky we might contend in five years.

No free agents are signing here unless we overpay.

Lottery here we come hurray.

I preferred the get Rondo, Barbosa, Sully healthy. sign Steamer and run it back option.

Dude, we aren't contending for 5 years anyway! Keeping KG and Pierce and adding Steamer and Barbosa is a contending team?!?!? Wow, that's a dream land. That's a 45 win team and a 1st round loss - no question. At best.

DA wants us to be a REAL contender again, not the Milwaukee Bucks for the next 5yrs, pretending to be contenders because we're in the playoffs.

thank you! END THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LET'S GO CELTICS!

I do not know you have a short memory or what?! This team one season before that, during 2011-12, reached at finals of East Conference being 3-2 over MIMAI HEAT. So, this team has absolutely power with KG and PP, plus Rondo, Terry, Ray etc to be a real contender. This team had necessity to add a big centre like Dwight Howard and maybe another good sniper like JJ Redick to beat HEAT and get a championship. You are creating a false imagination about the real facts.

My sentiments exactly. They were painful to watch last year, especially the first half of the season with everyone relatively healthy. Those losses to the Pistons, Cavs and Bobcats were especially painful. THAT sucked.

Now there is hope for the future. We may suck for a while, but with lower expectations, the disappointments will be fewer and watching them will consequently suck less.

I honestly enjoyed watching games in 06-07 far more than I did last year.
