Can someone clarify the rules of trade exceptions? I thought we are getting like a 7 million dollar trade exception from the Nets. Can you include that in with other players to match salary?
Also, can't teams take back 150% salary in a trade regardless?
Like... if Bogut (14 mil expiring), Jefferson (11 mil expiring) and Biedrins (9 mil expiring) = 34 million...
Can't they trade all three and get back 23 mil since with the new rules they only have to match within 150% of each other? Is that wrong?
Cuz if so... couldn't we could technically trade them Wallace (10 mil), Bass (6.5 mil), Lee (5 mil), Crawford (2 mil) ... total 23.5 mil and it would work financially??
Golden State would be freeing up 10 million in cap space and have enough to offer Dwight the max. Boston would be dumping their bad contracts for expirings. If you could include the 7 mil trade exception you could just send them Wallace, Bass and the trade exception and it would still work, right?
Someone correct me if I'm misunderstanding some rules.
For Golden State, it depends who they're trading to. If they trade to a team under the cap, who stays under the cap post trade, they don't have to take any salary back. If they trade to a team who is over the cap, but under the tax apron, that team could take $5 mil more than they receive. If they trade to a team over the tax apron, that team can take back 125% + $100000 of what they receive (this is why we're taking back a lot of salary with the Nets). If they trade to a team with a large enough exception, they can take back zero. The exception has to be large enough to take back a single contract, or multiple contracts, completely. You can't combine it with other players. (I think Orlando is currently the only team with a large enough exception to take back any of the contracts).
For our trade with the Nets, it is unclear exactly how much salary we're taking back due to Bogans, but it's about $28 mil. Meanwhile, we are sending out a shade over $33 mil. Due to the 125% rule, we would technically be allowed to take back a little over $41 million, which means that of golden state hopped into our deal with NJ, we could take back either Jefferson or Biedrins without having to send them any salary. If we sent them White or Randolph, we could take back any of their bad contracts, but not all. Presumably if we decided to help out we would be getting some sort of draft compensation, which is probably what other teams interested in helping would also get. (Festus Ezeli migh also be available, given that he's hurt and plays Dwight's position, and maybe the draft-and-stash player I think they drafted last week). Don't know if we'd want to go back over the luxury tax for that, but we could do it.
