Never believed in Fab from the moment he was draft hence he can't be a bust, at least to me. If anything he is the icing on the cake player to me. Got something where I thought there was nothing.

I can't see Fab making it pass year 3 of his contract. He simply sucks and does not seem to have the work ethic to change he status.

I haven't given up on fab. I learned my lesson after giving up on avery

You know who else was lost in the court looking like a deer caught in the headlights the first years of his playing career? Yep, Avery Bradley. And look at him now.

Disagree. In Avery's first year with Maine and his late season call-up, he was killing anyone who tried to dribble a basketball in his vicinity just the same as he does now. He was playing offense like Jordan Crawford- with a ton of aggressiveness and confidence, but terrible decision-making. He turned it over in bunches and was terrible running the point, but he got buckets.

And that was coming back from ankle surgery.

Outside of his amazing December, Melo hasn't shown skill, confidence, or resilience anywhere close to what Bradley showed in his rookie year.

Giving up on Fab at this point would be like giving up on the seeds you planted a week ago because they haven't started bearing big, red, juicy tomatoes yet.

I love this metaphor so much, because its July. If you planted your seeds a week ago, you are probably not going to get good tomatoes this summer.

THEREFORE Fab Melo is a hopeless basketball player.

BOOM!

I can honestly say that I never stopped believing in Bradley but I do not see the same potential in Fab Melo.  With Avery, I saw a player that was keeping up with the game just fine but was nervous and not confident on the offensive end (his defense was always fine).

With Melo, I see a player that is a half step or more behind the game.  It is not just about IQ or game knowledge, you can teach that to some degree; what I see lacking is basic reaction time, something that doesn't usually improve.

I predict he bounces around the NBA for some years and has some moments along the way but that overall he will turn out to be disappointment for a 20 something first round pick.

Well played.

Hate to break it to you but that is pretty average for a  20 something first round pick (bouncing around the NBA for a few years). If that happens it shouldn't be a big disappointment, just the average result. (obviously disappointing as Celtics fans)

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
In case some of you are interested, here are some articles on Fab throughout the year:

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/tag/_/name/fab-melo

It doesn't describe a lot on his development, but should give some insight about the man. I am in camp 2 - we knew we were getting a project, big men are the biggest kinds of projects, and it's only been one year.

Those who gave up on Perkins his first 3 years in the league are the same ones giving up on Fab at the moment.

Long way to go with him.  I see some great strides this past season by a raw player.

*NBA D-league all rookie first team
*All defensive first team (D-league)

You don't give up on players this early when they make those types of strides in the D-league.  You continue the development.

Hated the pick when it was made.

D-League All Defense. I think he showed some skill. For a 22nd pick in a somewhat weak draft, he seems to be on the right track to progression.

Unless of course if our expectations for him is to be our starting Center of the future averaging 14 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks a game. I don't see him being that, but he can be a very solid option as a back up C, playing 12-15 minutes providing rim protection and a few buckets here and there.

So I guess it's all about expectations, really. As a player picked late in the first, I expect him to have 6 points, 4-5 rebounds, a block on around 15 minutes per game. Anything more than that is gravy to me.

Not true. Count me among the people who was Perk fan but who is not a Melo fan.

There are two big differences between Perk and Fab:

1. Fab is 23 now. By the time Perk was 23 he was the starting center on a championship team, with four years of regular NBA play under his belt. Fab hasn't played a single productive minute of NBA basketball. And yeah I've heard the "he didn't start playing until late" line, but that is getting a little old at this point.

2. Perkins was as dedicated as any player I've ever seen in terms of conditioning and re-shaping his body to meet the demands of NBA play. I've seen no evidence that Melo shares that commitment.

guy hasnt even had a chance to prove himself.  He tore up the D league and Doc benches him.  So no, I think Fab should get a good look this year then go from there.
