Is there a camp 3 for the middle of both?
I haven't entirely given up on Fab, and don't see the reason why we should anyways. He's on a low risk high cost reward, and is on a team friendly contract. Its problematic that he's suffering so badly, but the thing about Syracuse is they have terrible defensive systems. It really screws up the mentality of the player, because they consistently use that system to fall back on when nothing works or seems to be going well.
The potential and athleticism is there, but the ability to utilize it is a) not there at all, b) still needs more time c) mixture of both.
Honestly, the only thing I want Fab to do is have at least 1.5 BPG, 8.5 RPG, 2.7 PPG, and solid defense on big men. He needs to bulk up, and really experience the intensity of NBA defense. I think him going to D-League was a good and bad thing. Because KG was no longer there mentoring I feel he'll be completely lost at times, without superior guidance backing him up.
Also think after he suffered the concussion that his mind set went out the door. He got lazy, got fat, and started doing horrible, and reverting to zone defense.
He needs to work on his stamina, shot blocking, and being able to box out. I don't know how a 6'9, and just as 1/4 faster undersized big men like Sullinger can box out and grab twice the rebounds Melo can.
Then again no one though Roy Hibbert would do as well as he is now.
Give Melo some time, and see where he goes with the Summer League. I'm hoping at best he can produce 1.6 BPG, 6.7 RPG, and a couple points in under 25 MPG, then I'll be fine.
I rather have him lock down big men then focus on trying to score.
