missing out on wiggins next year wont be bad because theres multiple good consolation prizes

literally you can throw a dart at any of these names you can leave the draft smiling.

I know a lot of people are going to be very very upset, but hopefully I can help talk people off the ledge a bit.  At this point in their careers, you aren't going to get anything substantial for Pierce and KG.  Those guys could have been bought out for nothing... they contemplated retirement LAST offseason.  I think if you tried to trade KG and Pierce for three 1st rounders (even late 1st rounders) in a video game, the game AI would say you were nuts and reject it.

This is definitely the right move.  It's going to be a painful year, but in 2014 when Pierce is a free agent again (feel free to sign him) and KG is probably retired... You'll be thrilled that you have those three picks and a shot at gold in the 2014 lotto.  If you were going to do it, you do it now... you don't do it in 2015... you dont' do it in 2016... you do it NOW when there are superstars coming.

Ainge is a beast and deserves credit.  This trade isn't for the short-sighted.  If you think Ainge deserves to be fired for this, you don't understand what being an NBA GM is all about and you don't understand Ainge's philosophy.  Ainge is all about collecting assets.  Frown on the having two picks in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 all you want, but you have to understand that picks like that give you assets, options and flexibility to make moves.  It was assets like those that allowed us to trade for Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett in the first place!  And even then, we know those guys were past their prime and the window was short.  We dragged it out two years too long and still came out of it with three 1st rounders (plus the one we got for Doc)... that's fantastic return for guys who could retire before the end of the 2013-14 season.

This is a good thing whether you understand it or not.  Our future is going to be very bright... as opposed to a dark cloud of progressive sickness.

All I have to complain about tonight is Wallace (unavoidable) and trading up for Olynyk  >:( but other than that I think we knew this day had to come soon. And Danny made it easy

Guys, WAKE UP. There were, are, and would have continued to be plenty of other ways to pile on assets without having to take in a disgusting $10M/yr contract for 3 years. This was a BAD trade, and there's no way to support it.

Yeah... remember the last time we tried to tank?

Ainge traded the 5th pick to Seattle for Allen and then traded for KG?

Whatever dude... You really thing that's gonna happen again? Plan A didn't work, the trades were Plan B. Really don't think we have a Plan B this time around, so we all better pray we really do get Wiggins.

I know how this story ends.

Not only that, I remember the sequel.

On the flip side, this team--while undoubtedly bad--at least has the prospect of being entertaining. I've got no problem rooting for a losing team, but a bad team that's hard to watch is another thing entirely.

I have no desire to delude myself into playing armchair general manager and pretend that I care about the future of the franchise in the long term. As a fan, we just traded the two best players the Celtics have had in twenty years. This sucks.

Like Roy, I am worried about how this story ends. On another note, who is going to want to watch this mess of a team next year?
Tell me about it.  I have a partial season package and I don't want to go.  There's nothing to see that you can't catch on TV - where fortunately you have the option of changing the station when they're down 25 at half time to the Knicks.  This is the problem with the NBA.  The only way to get better is to really suck and then hope you get lucky.

In two years that disgusting contract is an asset.

I'm no where near qualified for the job. Neither is anyone else here. But as far as today's trade goes, as long as you understand what rebuilding means, you would've said no to this job. Doesn't take a genius. Instead of becoming competitive in a few years, Ainge has set us back so we don't become competitive for many years.

What's the best case scenario of standing pat?

44 wins next season and a 1st or 2nd round exit?

Then what... KG and Pierce retire?  You play yourself out of the best lotto in over a decade... you call for Danny Ainge's head because he didn't get assets for KG and Pierce when they were still around?  Some people just don't get it at all.

If you're going to be "average", you might as well just be "awful"... there's a potential pot of gold at the end of the rainbow if you're awful.

So you'll stink this year... stink next year... and then maybe in year 3 when things come around, you're not going to be hating that 10 million dollar expiring contract that Gerald Wallace has.  You could package that 10 million dollar expiring contract with one of our many young players/draft picks and bring in an impact player.   Like I said... you wouldn't have been able to trade for Kevin Garnett without having Theo Ratliff's expiring contract.  That Wallace contract isn't as big of a deal as people think.  They just want an "instant fix" that doesn't exist in a world ruled by LeBron James and Kevin Durant.  You gotta build your team.  YOu aren't going to get a Superstar in 2013.  You might get one in 2014 though... and then maybe in 2016 you'll be ready to re-enter the discussion.

I don't know if it will happen again. I trust Ainge and Wyc though. They have more than proven they know what they're doing.

What was the alternative? C's weren't contenders next year anyways.

This team will likely be a serious contender again in 2017-18. But I guess there is not other choice. Can't wait to watch this team next year -- not.

Bottom line:   This is the smart move.  It's the best move.  It's not for sentimental folks.  Danny Ainge is a cold-hearted beast of a GM and we're lucky to have him calling the shots.  I wouldn't have been able to pull the trigger on this, but I'm sure as heck glad we have a GM who IS willing to.   KG and Pierce get to keep being relevant, Boston gets assets for the future... and we have hope at buiding a real dynasty.  Some people lack perspective so this is going to be really hard to wrap your mind around... but a year from now the hardcore Celtic fans will be overflowing with hope and optimism.   I have tons of trust in Ainge.  Dude couldn't have gotten a better package than this.

Honestly, I'm not even mad at the trade. Those unprotected picks could turn out to be future all stars for all we know.

I'm just genuinely sad to see Pierce and Garnett gone... especially Pierce. I'm a bit younger than some folks, so I wasn't privileged enough to watch the Bird Era, I grew up watching Pierce & 'Toine, so this is like my childhood hero going to another team.

Let's hope and pray Danny knows what he's doing.

Bottom line is this deal was foolish.  The C's did not need to take on an albatross contract to acquire extra picks.

Ainge just turned a 1 or 2 year rebuild into a rebuild with no end in sight.

Consider me unimpressed.
