I can see Danny wanting Olynyk to give us the same pick and pop game that KG did (assuming KG is gone), with some posting as well.

Dunno about that guy though - it seems like players like that get eaten alive by the superior athleticism and strength of NBA players.
That's my worry as well. His ceiling is Scola right? Which is good for the 16th pick, but I'm not sure he holds up. Scola only held up for a few years himself.

He has height that Scola didn't.  And it has to be remembered Scola played 7 years in Europe, more than he even played in the NBA.  Prime years for him.

But still, a taller Scola in this draft?  Sure sign me up.

Celtics trying to pick up another late 1st or early 2nd. Target, I'm hearing, is Missouri PG Phil Pressey. Celts leaning going big at 16.

Pressey?  Ugh, he looked absolutely terrible the dozen or so times I saw him play.  And the bigger the game, the more he tended to choke.

At least those picks should be fairly cheap.  If we flat-out buy one to get Pressey then I suppose he'd be worth a roll of the dice.

All kinds of tweets from Chad Ford and Adrian W. now about C's draft plans.

What happened--is Doc blabbing again?

Celtics like Steven Adams (if he falls) and Kelly Olynyk (if he falls) at 16. Also considering Shane Larkin there.

Happy with Adams or Olynyk.  Tho Olynyk more, as I see him able to contribute right away and feel things out.  Maybe Adams could but seems more like a project.  Obvious upside though.  Hearing Ford talk about him he was basically terrible at the start of the season and got much better this year.

Larkin... this is the one guy that will bum me out if we draft.  Maybe he can be a good enough defender, the size worries me though.

Yikes. I don't really want Kelly. He is going to get absolutely destroyed defensively IMO and is going to be very poor on the glass.

I'd rather draft Dieng if absolutely going big.

Dieng is the only pick that makes any sense and is realistic.

this would be a good choice in my mind, but i think dieng would be available a little later in the first round.

so maybe ainge can trade with the cavaliers to move down to #19 and pick up a second round pick in the process.

ha, ha...i can dream at least a little longer.

Whoever drafts Giannis Adetokunbo will be picking him to come to the NBA right away, teams tell me. He has no interest in being stashed.

For what it's worth Ford says the C's are trying to pick up a late 1st or 2nd.  You might not be far off.

In event Boston moves back from No. 16, Danny Ainge brought guard Ray McCallum to facility for workout on Wednesday, league sources tell Y!

If they move back in a crappy draft I will throw up. Then again I'm doing the nba draft drinking game so I might throw up anyway.

I don't know why you could be so bothered by them moving back if you say the draft is crappy.

I mean I'd rather just pick at 16 but if we get something else out of a deal where we also move back so be it.

I'm a fan so I'm happy with this.  I feel like he can pick up things and become a solid enough defender.  Offensively he can shoot, dribble, runt he floor, and pass.

We never look offensive with bigs really so there is a lot of appeal to me.
Agreed, I think him and Sullinger would play very well together.  Both great at ceiling their men, carving out space, passing from the high post and hitting jumpers.

I think Olynyk will eat teams alive in the pick and roll with Rondo. This move would leave the Celtics in need of a rim protector but I think the areas he excels in will cover up the deficiency.

Yes I agree.

I think we are so hung up on defense for big men that we don't acknowledge offensive strengths.  And I'm a defense first type of guy so I get that but it needs to be said.  He has a nice offensive skillset right now already.  He reminds me of a taller Scola in a lot of ways.

And yes he and Sully would be a nice passing duo together.
To me back end defense is more about positioning than sheer speed or athleticism. Perk is a great defender in the pick and roll while having cinder blocks for feet. The way that Olynyk positions himself on offense gives me hope for him to become a good help defender (meaning he understands angles and spacing on offense so he can come to understnad the same concepts on defense)

I think he's way more mobile than Scola, but that is a good comparison. Although he doesn't appear quick with his first step he is a long strider and gets up and down the court fast.

Ugh, no way.  I like Giannis, but I really don't want to waste his rookie contract waiting for him to develop, only to finally have him figure it out in time for a large extension.  Let him develop on his Spanish team's dime, or don't pick him.

Good point on the footwork.  When I've thought about him developing on D I've thought of Sully, who was said to be a liability coming in.  He also had good footwork and with some time he learned the positioning to be a solid NBA defender rather quickly.

I don't expect Olynyk to be a shot blocker, but at 7 ft with some good footwork he could be a solid defender.

To your other part, another player who I have thought of to compare him to is Divac.  In how he moves, his length, and he has some of that passing.  I'm really interested to see how Olynyk's passing translates.  There is much more freedom for bigs to pass in the NBA and much more spacing and it seems like that could be a nice high post weapon for him in addition to the jumper and drives he can go to there.

I think Divac is his absolute ceiling. Tp for being one of few people who really like Olynyk, a lot of people on various boards have killed me for liking him.

I wonder if getting another pick in this draft says that Ainge is leaning toward letting KG and Pierce come back until at least the trade deadline.  He'll have to give up something for that pick and you'd think he'd want to save any and all resources if he's planning to deal KG or Pierce in the near future.

Yes I didn't mean to say otherwise.  Divac is a great, great player and that'd be a ceiling comparison.  Those aspects of his game though remind me of watching Divac, who kind of glided around the floor and always made smart passes.

There are guys like him that don't translate, so I get the worry.  But people said similar things about Sullinger too.  At some point you have to say this guy was productive in college, he has a great skill set for a 7 footer and he can move so hopefully he can learn to defend.
