Clips new strategy is to land Doc first, roll dice on KG/PP later. Story with @ESPNSteinLine coming shortly

Sources told ESPN.com that league officials have in recent days had communicated to both teams they had serious misgivings about the proposed transactions because Garnett and Rivers have been shopped by the Celtics as a package deal, which would violate NBA rules prohibiting contingencies or sides deals in any trade.

Thinking back about all the "chatter" coming from sources about this trade it seems to me that virtually *all* of it has been from Clipper sources given to LA media, and then picked up by the rest of the media. Very little appears to have come out of the Celtics camp, isn't that how it appears to all of you, too?

Now, if this is the case, then *why* would the Clipper front office be so loose lipped about these transactions? They must have known that all this talk would irrevocably link the trade with Doc's release. They must have known that would end up poisoning the well, so to speak. Could it be possible that they did this on purpose?

"See, Chris, we tried to get Doc and KG in here like you wanted. We did *everything* we possibly could. You can't blame us for this falling through. It would have gone through, too, if it wasn't for Stern. Blame Dallas, Houston and Atlanta! They are the ones that got in Stern's ear and had him veto the deal. Yeah, blame them! Well, that didn't work, but we're going to go try to get Dwight for you now. If you *sign* this extension right now, we'll have a much better chance of getting him, too. How about it?"

Nah! That couldn't be. :)

I would be ecstatic if they traded Doc for 2 picks (that is supposedly what they submitted to the league).  Then, either held on to KG and Pierce, or tried to get more for them.

I like Doc, but at this point, its time for him to go.  And to get 2 picks for him would really help the rebuilding/reloading process.

Personally I don't know what's so unfair about this deal that the league office has to intervene.  If every involved party is alright with it, why should some uninvolved party have the right to call it off?

I think it is about the league wanting to avoid a precedent being set for trading a coach along with a player.

Yep.  They want to keep considerations not listed under the CBA out of trade packages.

But that there is already a precedent of teams compensating for coaches makes me think that they are worried about more than the technical precedent.

I think a potential element of concern is how much off-the-books value Doc represents in this package, and it's bothering other teams enough to get them to protest.

Basically by getting Doc, the Clips may be isolating the rest of the market from getting KG and Pierce (in the likely event that he gets bought out).

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams

SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari

Agreed on this.

If it's possible, why not?  Doc doesn't want to be in this for the long haul, oh well.  Adding a couple picks would be nice, some parts to round out a package deal that could maybe land us a larger talent.

I agree.  I like Doc too, but the Clippers could sign Lionel Hollins or George Karl (both equal to Doc in my opinion) and keep their picks.  Getting two picks for a coach is an outrageous steal, even if the picks are likely to be late firsts.

A "measly pick" or two and/or some cash is all you'd ever have gotten for Doc. You can't get a player for him, as that would also be against the rules and no coach is worth more than a pick or two.

And yes, if Doc wants to go coach LAC then I'd let him do it for a pick or two. Unprotected picks start at two firsts and settle for one first and one second.

Clippers want to set aside Garnett deal for now, but are showing no willingess to offer Celtics a draft pick for Doc Rivers, sources tell Y!

---- AKA Clippers continue to give no ground whatsoever.  Out of principle, if I'm Danny, I just walk away from them.

If they're really not willing to give up a pick for Doc then he's going to be broadcasting.
