With all the talk about Noel around here, I was trying to think of some great NBA players born and raised in the Boston area.  None were popping into my head.  I'm sure there must be some, though.

Can anyone think of any great NBA player out of Boston or the surrounding area?  A top ten list?

not sure exactly how you are defining "out of boston" here. born in boston? raised in boston? went to college in boston?

if the last one, then let's throw jeremy lin on the list. if harvard doesnt count then i dont know what does.  :)

from Boston college...

Blaney, George 1961-1961
Cousy, Bob 1950-1969 HOF
Foley, Jack 1962-1962
Heinsohn, Tom 1956-1964 HOF
Kaftan, George 1948-1952
Mullaney, Joe 1949-1949
O'connell, Dermie 1948-1949
Palazzi, Togo 1954-1959
Witts, Garry 1981-1981

from BU...
Bell, Raja 2000-2010
Boyd, Ken 1974-1974
Garvin, Jim 1973-1973
Hayes, Jim 1970-1970
Plummer, Gary 1984-1992

obviously, not a ton of stars, but a fair number of players.

and for anyone who is wondering, MIT has not produced a single nba player. geez, it makes you wonder about the quality of that school.  ;)

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Well are we talking about what hospital someone was born in or where they grew up?

According to wiki he moved here when he was 12 and learned to play bball in Cambridge.

I figured that's close enough

I thought of Ewing after I started this thread.  He counts as a Boston product in my book, having moved with his family from Jamaica at the age of seven.

So, Ewing, and next is Dana Barros.  You'd think there'd be more players out of New England in general who have been NBA stars.

It'd be nice to see Noel live up to his potential.  Maybe Ricky Ledo, out of Providence, can make his mark as well.  It could end up being a good draft year for New England prospects.

Tommy is a New Jersey guy.

I think Noel is from Alabama. I was half paying attention to a Sportscenter feature on him, and it looked like his family is still there, and I'm pretty sure that is where he is rehabbing right now.

From Wikipedia:

"Nerlens Noel was born in Everett, Massachusetts. He attended Everett High School for 1 year before transferring to Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire."

If we are talking about where players grew up Reggie is from Maryland.

How about Chris Herren from Fall River. Great great high school player.  Too bad he got into drugs.

I'm sure there are more if you are talking New England. One coming to mind is Marcus Camby
