They might view Jeff as a cheaper, more malleable version of Josh.
Interesting, I was just going to say that I view Smith as a more expensive, less versatile version of Green.
I don't think you have a whole lot of evidence to support 'less versatile'. Cheaper, certainly.
Smith can pretty much only defend PFs. Green has defender both forward spots with reasonable success this season, with some short stretches at SG sprinkled in for good measure. So yes, definitely more versatile.
Um, Smith can defend 3 positions competently (C/PF/SF). Green can defend two (PF/SF)-but only if the PF is similar in stature.
Smith is such a vastly better and more versatile defender, I really don't see how you can possibly justify your opinion.
Smith cannot, and has never defended the center position. Per 82games.com, he spent the vast majority of his playing time this season as a 4, whereas Green split his time between the 3 and the 4 roughly equally.
When Horford was out for the majority of last year, Smith spent some time at C, and while I don't have numbers to back it up, I'm pretty sure he played pretty well.
Atlanta has often gone to the "big" lineup of Smith-Horford-center, but that's been disastrous, as Smith can shoot worth a lick. Defensively, he's capable of covering SFs.
All in all, I'd say Smith is a more versatile defender, but Green offers much more offense that Smith does.
